The Broken Bus Dayton

The Broken Bus Dayton The Broken Bus Dayton is a nonprofit organization started in 2020 serving the homeless population in Dayton, Ohio. This is our effort at doing that.

We drive into Dayton weekly in a small bus modified for 6 passengers and supplies like food, clothing and hygiene items. The Broken Bus Dayton (BBD) is a non-profit organization begun by the Duiker family in 2020 and modeled off the Broken Bus Ministry in Cincinnati, OH. Our mission is to share faith, hope, and love with those who are homeless in the Dayton area. We do this by driving into the cit

y weekly with a modified bus full of food, clothing, hygiene items and loving people (the bus can take 6 passengers). We stop in places we know we will be able to meet and serve those living in tents, cars, or other situations, and we drive the city with eyes and hearts open, looking for opportunities to connect and serve. While our small organization does not attempt to solve the problem of homelessness, we trust that when those who are on the bus connect with those we meet on the streets of Dayton, lives are being transformed and hearts are being broken open on both accounts. As followers of Jesus who take his commandment to love our neighbors seriously, we believe we must know those who are poor in order to love them well.

🚨 Big Announcement! 🚨
In February 2024, we announced that The Broken Bus Dayton would be suspending operations when our bus finally refused to cooperate. Even then, the work didn’t stop completely—I continued serving where I could, sometimes straight out of my own car. And through it all, God never stopped nudging us forward.
Today, I’m incredibly grateful to share that we’re back on the road.
After we retired our last bus, a former youth member mentioned a possible connection with someone who had vans. Over the following months, I checked in occasionally, never knowing if or when something might come together. Then, the Monday before the Affordable Housing Summit hosted by Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, I received a call from Al Steverson of Restaurant Technologies with unexpected news: a van was available.
This morning, I traveled to Mason, Ohio to pick up this beautiful new vehicle—donated outright to our humble ministry.
I am deeply humbled and thankful. My prayer is that God will use this van to bless those in need—whether continuing to serve our unhoused neighbors, supporting people facing housing insecurity, or stepping into new opportunities that emerge. We still have several donated items from before the pause, and there will be upcoming calls for volunteers and additional donations, so please stay tuned.
And yes—many of you joked that the old bus was cursed because of its name 😄
So take a look at the photos and drop your name suggestions in the comments (just nothing with the word broken).
🙏
Lord, may these new resources be used for Your purposes. Let this ministry flourish through this opportunity—not our will, but Yours. All glory and honor belong to You. Amen.

I had the chance to meet with Belbrook High Schools The Other TP Club. The Other TP Club’s motto is Toilet paper is free, why not Tampons and pads?

They have worked to ensure feminine hygiene products are available to the students of Belbrook. Recently they expanded to assist other actions and chose The Broken Bus Dayton. The Other TP did a drive at the Homecoming game and presented us with their donation (middle table). Thank you Belbrook Other TP Club!!!

I asked and you stepped up. Today I had the privilege of delivering clothes, bedding and pantry items to the family I met several weeks back. Thank you to all who provided and a special thanks to Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church.

Update: please no more bedding. We have more than enough.

Friends: a few weeks back we met a family living in the park. This family was waiting on a new house, which last week they finally moved into. They are asking for some boys clothing.

16 year old wears L men’s clothes.

Another boy wears Size M clothes.

Twin Boys wear size 12 youth clothes

Another boy wears size 7

I believe the family is asking for pillows and blankets. Also let me know what other odds and ends things you might have available. I would love to make a delivery to them next Saturday.

It took less than 20 minutes to hand out 22 sandwiches!!! I was able to get through 20% of my normal route. I can’t believe how many people needed out help. I saw the same faces I encountered last week. I met a young man who accepted breakfast, snacks and socks but who offered up his milk for me to share with those I encountered. He wanted to help those in need. Though I didn’t give his used milk out, I was touched by him wanting to give back. I encountered a woman struggling with PTSD. She needed someone who could patch a flat tire. I only wished the Lord sent her someone with actual tire patching skills. 😆 Last weeks family is still waiting on housing. There was a failed inspection that requires the landlord to make some updates. Prayers that those updates happen quickly.

I am in desperate need of snack packages. We are out!!! I went through more in two weeks than I do in two months. Snack packages include chips, protein bars, packages of tuna, slim Jims, applesauce and other hearty, protein based snacks.

I hate hitting people up for money, but the last two weeks cost more than $120 for sandwiches, water, and ice. I have a PayPal or I can set up a Venmo for the bus. You can give through Facebook or contact me to send a check. 100% goes back to helping those out.

Clothing and other items:
Medium women’s sweatshirts or hoodies
T-Shirts of all sizes
Sweatpants of all sizes
Jackets

I am also in need of hygiene kits. We are down to our last dozen or so. This includes toothpaste, brush, deodorant, shampoo, body wash/soap, wash cloth, lotion, chapstick, hand sanitizer, etc.

Thank you all for what you provide. You are a blessing so that we can be a blessing.

“I didn’t realize it had gotten this bad!” I thought last Sunday when I drove through Veterans Park. For perspective, I am used to seeing 6-8 tents tucked into the parks tree line. When I counted, there were 22. So this Saturday, I packed my car full of your donations and made my way back out. I bought 25 sandwiches but I could have purchased 40. I went through tons of clothes, underwear, socks and t-shirts. The need was palpable. Mostly new faces. I met a beautiful family waiting any day on a new home. I met a family with a special needs daughter. Several were people who expressed how they never imagined they would be in this scenario. I prayed with many. Lord, break our hearts by what breaks yours…

I do not have a bus 🚌. For now, I will be in my car. But the Lord re-opened my eyes to the needs and hurts of our brothers and sisters experiencing homelessness. This was the worst I have seen it in 4 years. I will be posting future needs. but for now,

Lord please look after our brothers and sisters facing homelessness. Please guide us to act as your hands and feet to this community. Let all know that s/he is nothing less and nothing more than a beloved child of God. In your mercy…

“The spirit is willing but the [bus] is weak.” It pains us to announce that we are once again suspending operations due to issues involving the bus. It has become apparent over the last several months that the bus just does not have the capacity to meet our needs. We do not want to use good money to solve a bad problem. We could continue to replace more and more on the bus, but we do not want our resources to keep a vehicle going when we can use those limited resources to help those experiencing homelessness .

We are not done. But we are done with our bus. We are going to pray and explore where God might be calling us. In the meantime, we will find ways to continue using our resources to help those most vulnerable. We will invite you in on whatever is next. But rest assured, there is a next thing.

Until then, we want to thank everyone for your resources, assistance and prayers. We served just shy of 4 years. We managed to help feed, clothe, care, and pray for hundreds of our neighbors.

Please join us in prayer and discernment on the next thing. Peace and blessings.

We had a great outing with Angie Hulsman and Threads of Miami Valley. She bought and wrapped Christmas packages and gave them out to those we met. It was rainy, but each person was excited and grateful to receive these wonderful gifts. Thank you Angie and Threads. We are truly blessed to have your support.
