Robert Randolph is one of the most innovative and influential pedal steel guitarists of his generation, blending gospel, rock, blues and soul into a sound that is uniquely his own.
Raised in Orange, New Jersey, Robert began his musical journey in the House of God Church, where he learned to play the pedal steel guitar, or “Sacred Steel,” a cornerstone of the church’s musical tradition. As a teenager, he honed his skills during church services, channeling the powerful energy of gospel music through his instrument.
It wasn’t long before Robert began bringing that energy outside the church, blazing a trail through the rock, blues and jam band worlds with the six-time Grammy-nominated Robert Randolph & The Family Band. Along the way, he has shared his incredible musicianship with artists including Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews Band, Santana, Norah Jones, Ozzy Osbourne, Elton John, Metallica, Sheryl Crow and many more.
His playing has also been featured on Jon Batiste’s Grammy-winning Album of the Year We Are, the Elvis movie soundtrack, and Beyoncé’s Grammy-winning Cowboy Carter. He has even earned 13 Emmy Awards for his work composing music for sports broadcasts.
Now, Robert is entering a new chapter with his upcoming solo album Preacher Kids, produced by Shooter Jennings, drawing from the same gospel roots that first inspired him while exploring new musical territory.
