Lake County Courthouse Begins Remodeling of Historic Courtroom
The Lake Courthouse has begun remodeling efforts to restore and enhance its historic courtroom while maintaining its rich heritage.
As part of the project, the chairs and platform installed in the 1950s have been removed. These elements were not original to the courtroom and are not considered historical. No final decision has been made on whether the chairs will be replaced. Officials are evaluating options that align with the courtroom’s historic integrity.
Additionally, early assessments suggest that the original maple flooring beneath the carpet may be refinished, offering an opportunity to revive an authentic architectural feature of the space.
The jury box and judge’s bench will remain untouched as part of this renovation, ensuring that key historical elements of the courtroom are preserved.
In addition to the courtroom restoration, the courthouse has also received a grant to clean and restore its old skylights, further enhancing the building’s historic charm and natural lighting.
Our goal is to restore the courtroom in a way that respects its past while improving its functionality for the future, We are carefully considering each aspect of this project to maintain the character of this historic space.
The Lake County Courthouse operates as a not-for-profit organization and has no affiliation with the City of Crown Point. The renovation project is being funded through several grants, which have been awarded to support the preservation of this historic landmark.
