Who knew that the old Lazarus building’s roof was a naturalized, sustainable garden?????? As a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building, every detail was considered in lighting, water consumption and even air flow. This garden was just one more additional effort to save on water and energy. With bee hives, peregrine falcons, and geese nests it’s also a wildlife habitat up there! 🐝🦅🦆

Lunch at the Spaghetti Warehouse followed the tour and we have to do a shout out to Michelle 👏👏👏 who took amazing care of us. She has worked for the Spaghetti Warehouse for 30 years!!! Thirty five members of the CEA-R toured the Fran Ryan Center on the former site of Douglas Elementary School. It is a wonderful facility that offers art and athletic programs for adults. A delicious lunch was created and prepared by Paula Sessions, the proprietor of Taste and See Catering. Following lunch, the members were able to shop at the Golden Hobby Gift Shop which sells handmade art created by adults ages fifty and older. It was another great event for the retired teachers from Columbus City Schools. The new brochure will be out soon full of another season of fun filled, educational events! It is with great sadness that we report the loss of a distinguished alumnus from Berwick Alternative K-8 and Eastmoor Academy, who tragically lost their life in an accident while serving in Iraq. Tyler Simmons exemplified exceptional academic and social qualities as a model student. Our hearts go out to all the lives that this young man touched!

Twenty-two members of the CEA-R toured Scott’s-Miracle Gro Field, formerly known as Lower.com Field with even some
Members dinning their Crew gear. What a surprise when we found out that Jim, one of the two tour guides was a retired CCS Music teacher. Members were in awe of the work out facilities, the expansive suites and the vast size of the stadium. The greatest pride of the Crew tour guides is the lush green grasses that are maintain throughout the year under the innovative grow lights. Off we went to The Red Door Tavern located on Fifth Avenue in Grandview. This quaint, local diner allowed us to compare notes about our tour of Scott’s Miracle Grow Fields. Hope you can make it to one of the Crew Games or better yet, our next adventure! For more information, go to Cearetired.com to learn about our fun filled tours.

Clintonville Woman’s Club was the backdrop for our speaker, Jason Manley a Columbus City School graduate. He is the founder of Heroes United, an organization that rescues dogs from shelters and pairs them with our nation’s heroes - veterans, law enforcement, firefighters and EMTs at no cost. After listening to his trauma filled childhood and his Middle East tour of duty, he found the gift of life in his rescued dog Abraham Lincoln. Jason has committed his life to providing the transformative power of the human animal bond to save our local heroes. Jason could not personally thank his former teachers for understanding that under that troubled child was a person who needed love and guidance so he thanked us in their place Be sure to listen to his words in the video. If you have any interest in supporting or volunteering to help our heroes, he would love for you to contact him. (See photo for contact info).

Our next event is February 19th, a tour at the former Lower.com Field which is now Scott’s Miracle Gro-Field.
