The Mid Ohio Farm is a located on the hilltop. This “smart farm” uses technology to grow fresh, healthy and nutritious food that goes directly to those who are food insecure. This is not just a farm but also a facility that does cooking classes, food demonstrations, gardening classes and tours. As a CCS teacher, I was thrilled to find out that the M*F hosts over 2,000 of our students for a Farming and Agriculture Day as well as provides farming supplies and support to many of our schools. Sean McKay conducted the tour as well as created a farm fresh salad grown right there at Mid Ohio. The lettuce was grown on the living hydroponics wall, cucumbers and tomatoes were grown in the green house. The future of farming is constantly improving and we were able to witness the this progress at the Mid Ohio Food Farm! We hope you can join us at our future events. All aboard the Cardinal Bus….twenty-five members of CEA-R headed to Mansfield to the Ohio Bird Sanctuary, whose goal is to rehab and release injured birds. With 3.5 acres of land to explore, bird enclosures and 30 different species of songbirds and raptors, the members were captivated by their visit. Next the members dined at The Blueberry Patch, a quaint restaurant on the south side of Mansfield. It was another amazing adventure for the CEA-R retirees!

Thirty members of the CEA-R organization visited the Ohio Herb Center in downtown Gahanna. We toured the herb gardens surrounding the center, learned about the history of herbal usage and created our own herbal infused vinegar. Following the tour, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at Rusty Bucket. We are looking forward to our next gardening adventure when we tour the Mid Ohio Food Farm. The Annual Meeting for members of the CEA-R took place on June 17th at the Berwick Event Center. A donation was made to Choices, the sole residential domestic violence home for women and children in Columbus. Elections of officers and board members were held, followed by a delicious Italian-style luncheon. A tribute was paid to Jeanne Stoll for her numerous years of service to the CEA-R. We are deeply grateful for her time and dedication to organizing each event. Unfortunately, she was not in attendance to hear the kind words and enjoy her cake. Steven Toole, the Executive Officer of STRS, discussed the changes being made within our pension system and shared information about the financial aspects of STRS and their impact on members. A lengthy Q&A session ensued, allowing members to receive accurate answers to questions related to false statements made about STRS. Our next event will be held at the Gahanna Herb Center. At the newly established Canal Wi******er Library, forty members of CEA-R convened to gain insight into the Great Council Park. Ryan Dimisa, representing the GCP Outreach department, provided an educational presentation on the historical and contemporary aspects of the Ohio Shawnee Indians. The group learned about their rich cultural heritage, including their history of fur trading with Eastern countries. Missionary records indicate that the Shawnee were known for their joyful nature. However, due to the Tribal Removal Act of 1830 signed into law by Andrew Jackson, there are no longer any Shawnee living in Ohio, although there are 530 federally recognized Tribal Nations nationwide. The two-year-old state park, designed to resemble a long house, was carefully constructed to represent Indian culture, with every detail meticulously considered. This event provided a valuable learning opportunity for the retirees in attendance. The next event will be the Annual Banquet, to be held at the Berwick Manor. Who knew that the old Lazarus building’s roof was a naturalized, sustainable garden?????? As a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building, every detail was considered in lighting, water consumption and even air flow. This garden was just one more additional effort to save on water and energy. With bee hives, peregrine falcons, and geese nests it’s also a wildlife habitat up there! 🐝🦅🦆

Lunch at the Spaghetti Warehouse followed the tour and we have to do a shout out to Michelle 👏👏👏 who took amazing care of us. She has worked for the Spaghetti Warehouse for 30 years!!!
