Forest Acres Police Officer Greg Alia lost his life in the line of duty in 2015. His son, Sal, was only six months old.

At 3 a.m. that night, Kassy Alia Ray began collecting positive stories about law enforcement through . That effort eventually became Serve & Connect, an organization that brings officers, residents and community groups together to make neighborhoods safer.

Its Greg’s Groceries program gives officers boxes of food to deliver directly to people in crisis. More than 40 percent of those deliveries have reportedly led to referrals for additional help, including food pantries, domestic violence shelters and mental health services.

Since 2016, the organization says it has also raised $1.299 million for law enforcement families following critical incidents and line-of-duty losses. “We need our community to work in partnership with our police,” Alia Ray said. “We need community members to step up, to speak out, to take action.”

THIS is what real police and community partnership looks like.

We’re grateful to share a heartwarming story from our partners at the Anderson Police.

Three Greg’s Groceries boxes were recently delivered to a local couple facing an especially difficult season. The wife is receiving hospice care at home, while her husband is no longer able to drive. Both are living on a fixed income, and they were also waiting for assistance through Meals on Wheels.

These boxes will help provide meals for the couple and ease the burden of getting to the grocery store when transportation and support are limited. While this may seem like a small gesture, we know that sometimes a little help can make a meaningful difference.

The Anderson Police Department will continue checking in with the family to see how we can help meet their needs moving forward.
