You may have recently seen Maxwell Wolf at Silhouette Stages in The Crucible, but this role of Johnny is not anything like the Reverend he played then! We asked him a few questions to get to know him and his character.
"What is the most challenging—or most rewarding—emotion you have to tap into for this role?"
Regret. Johnny does a lot of stupid things in this show. He hurts the people around him, including himself. In turn, the city chews him up and spits him out, leaving him right where he started; alone and unmoored. during the finale, Whatsername, those emotions are on full display. It’s an interesting emotion to tap into after spending the entire show being flagrant and self absorbed.
"What is your go-to 'angry' song when you need to blow off steam?"
Killing in the Name of by Rage Against the Machine. Turn that song on full blast and i’m unstoppable
"What is one thing your character is searching for that they haven't found yet?"
There’s a lot Johnny hasn’t found. I would say the biggest is a sense of purpose and belonging. He’s filled with delusions of grandeur, believing he’s above those around him. By the end of the show, he’s at his lowest point. My heart truly believes that Johnny will find purpose one day. but before he does that, he has to learn to love and respect himself and those around him.
"In three words, how would you describe your character’s 'inner riot'?"
Rage, Love, Discontent.
