TCOE will hold their monthly Community Academy this coming Saturday, March 7th, at Oakland Mills Middle School.

The focus of this month's academy and Health Relationships and Dating Dangers. The reality is that our young people are dating. We, as parents, need to ensure our teens are dating safely and avoid abusive situations. Let's continue to arm our young people with the tools they need. These tools will follow them throughout their life.

TCOE hopes to see you there.

Good Morning. The forum last night on Effective Discipline wasn’t as well attended as we would have liked, but there was great discussion. There is a definite need for the mentoring of students and families. We learned of resources available to help. We need help from community members. Contact TCOE to find out more.
Themes last night from round table discussions included:
1) Empathy, walking in the shoes of the student and family. Determining what they may be going through and what may be preventing them from learning.

2) Training/Mentoring, for the parents and for the students. They may not know how to handle situations. A particular topic for the students was Code-switching which TCOE is preparing a proposal for with a recommendation. Transitions to/from school levels was discussed. Training for staff was also raised.

3) Priorities, the staff has a lot of competing and conflicting priorities. There are programs that need to be done...where does discipline fits into the the other work that needs to be done? Staff is overwhelmed.

4) Data does not show the problems as presented. The schools in trouble may be masked because of the combined statistics. There may be staff with outdated ideals about student behavior. Without proper breakdowns, the community can’t help with possible issues that may be happening at that school. Look at other factors such as staff age/tenure. This may help also identify inconsistent discipline practices.

5) Look at what others are successfully doing and incorporate things that have worked.

6) Revamp PBIS. It may increase numbers and students misbehave to get acknowledgement. Only students have the issues get rewards. Pay attention to the implementation.
