’Twas Shabbat before Purim Palooza, and all through the town,
Excitement was buzzing and couldn’t calm down.
The costumes were hung in the closets with care.
Such anticipation was special and rare.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
With visions of groggers that rattled their heads.
And parents with calendars, busy and bright,
Had circled the date with sheer delight.
When out on the street there arose such a chatter,
I sprang from the challah to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I hurried to peek—
Was that popcorn I smelled? Oh, what a treat!
Painted faces would soon sparkle with laughter and light,
And a giant Lite Brite glowing bold and bright.
With games set for tossing and prizes to win,
And bounce houses waiting for tumbling within.
There’d be hamantaschen, triangular and sweet,
From Sunflower Bakery—a delicious treat!
At PJ Library story time’s nook,
Little ones gather to hear a good book.
And there by the stage, in glittering gown,
A Glinda look-alike would twirl all around.
A circus performer—Greg May by name—
Will juggle and balance with marvelous aim.
There’d be Kona Ice in its colorful truck,
Shaving sweet rainbows for just a few bucks.
And Travelin’ Tom’s would be pouring with cheer
Hot coffee for grown-ups who need it this year.
And Randi’s Raffle, in loving embrace,
Honoring a dear one with kindness and grace.
From every congregation, both large and small,
Spending Purim together, one and all.
So proudly we gather, both near and far-flown,
With a community spirit so brightly shown.
All from the heart and the vision we see,
Here at Jewish Federation of Howard County!
So light up the candles and welcome the rest,
Let Shabbat bring calm to each eager chest.
For Sunday we’ll gather, both young and mature—
To laugh, to give, to celebrate Purim for sure!
