We could not have asked for a better Fall day for a walking tour with our friends at Historic Columbia! ☀️🍂

A big thank you to Jeff for teaching us about the former main campus of the SC State Hospital. Jeff shared incredible insight into the complicated history of the campus, and how preservation advocacy efforts through the site’s redevelopment as The BullStreet District have helped retain historically significant buildings alongside the stories of the many men, women, and children whose lives were impacted by the State Hospital over the course of its history.

Come along as we join Historic Columbia’s tour guides for a stroll through the heart of the BullStreet District. This tour delves into the rich history of the former main campus of the South Carolina State Hospital, highlighting the experiences of men, women, and children affected by mental illness—whether as patients, caregivers, or family members—from the early 19th century to the late 20th century. Their stories and the retention of historically significant buildings have driven Historic Columbia’s preservation advocacy efforts throughout the site’s redevelopment as The BullStreet District, which began in 2015. Attendees will view the exterior of some of the remaining historic buildings in The BullStreet District during this walking tour, which will begin at the historic Mills Building and last approximately 60 minutes.

Please note that lunch will not be provided on this tour. Ticket sales will cover the cost of Historic Columbia’s tour guide services.

The new South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) headquarters is a three-story, 151,000 SF facility designed to consolidate multiple office locations into one central hub that meets the department’s evolving needs. Located just outside Columbia, SC, adjacent to Interstate 26, the building features flexible meeting rooms, event spaces, collaborative work areas, private offices, and support zones. The design emphasizes open circulation pathways and abundant natural light to create a healthy, functional, and welcoming environment. This tour will highlight key design strategies related to life safety, accessibility, indoor environmental quality, and sustainable performance, offering participants valuable insights into how thoughtful planning and building systems contribute to both occupant well-being and organizational efficiency.

Meet us at Craft & Draft (2706 Devine Street) with your sketchbook and pencils! We will be joining Urban Sketchers Columbia for an evening of drawing and drinks. We will walk around the neighborhood sketching buildings, houses, and streetscapes from 6-7PM and meet back at Craft & Draft from 7-7:30PM for a drink and to share work!

Meet Lorraine White, Project Manager at Pond! Lorraine has been on the AIA Columbia Board for 8 years and has served as its Treasurer for the past 7 years. She initially joined the Board as a way to meet other architects in the area, and to get more involved in the community.

Lorraine graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame. As an Army brat, Lorraine is from everywhere and nowhere but has called Columbia home for the past 22 years. Most of Lorraine’s career has been focused on Federal Government projects, meaning a number of her projects are on military bases. Lorraine says she likes the idea of serving her country in a non-traditional way!

When she’s not at work, Lorraine is a mom to a 15-year-old teenager with enough hobbies to keep them both busy! But when left to her own devices, she loves to read or binge some silly show on Netflix.

The Idea Center is the newest collaboration hub for the University of South Carolina. At the corner of Gadsden and Greene, this 3-level interior upfit neighbors the new retail spaces and apartments at 737 Gateway. At just under 44,000 SF, renovations include two 400-person flex spaces, meeting rooms, craft room, catering kitchen, and event space overlooking Colonial Life Arena. The lively and playful interior design of the Idea Center reflects its active programming and diverse user groups.
