Saturday! We met lots of new Midlands people, talking about gardening for wildlife, making mosquito bucket traps, and what to native shrubs and trees to grow powerlines to keep the tree trimmers away.
Big thanks to our volunteers, Ann, Aidan-Lee, Madilyn, and Lynn. We can't do this work without your enthusiasm and dedication!
And what an honor to table next to folks like Nature As Teacher and Congaree Land Trust.

The Midlands Chapter has created a pilot virtual native plant gardening workshop exclusively for SCNPS Members! In 3 online sessions we’ll cover garden planning, planting, and maintenance.

Before the final workshop, we’ll take a Saturday morning field trip to visit a Columbia member’s front yard native plant garden and a nearby public native plant garden with the designer, Midlands Chapter President Andrew Melanson. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to ask questions, hear about what shaped these gardens, and get good ideas.

Are you pursuing the Certificate in Native Plant Studies? Fall 2026 courses are now available, and it's time to sign up.
The course is a partnership of South Carolina Botanical Garden and South Carolina Native Plant Society, based on South Carolina’s rich botanical heritage.
Classes can be taken in any order, and there is no time limit on completing the program. Courses are open to anyone interested in learning more about native plants. Active SCNPS members get 10% off tuition!

Last Saturday our small but enthusiastic work crew of Jessica, Mary, Frank (Midlands VP), and Andy (Midlands President) took on clearing a firebreak for Lisa Matthews Memorial Bay. This will prepare it to be burned later this year. Thanks to them for all the help!
Here's a look at what we were working on as well as some cool plants in the area. That's Dalea pinatta (summer farewell) with Aristida (wiregrass) in the background, and Asclepias amplexicaulis (clasping milkweed). But this Carolina Bay is a haven for thousands more interesting species. Well worth our protection and time!
