The South Carolina Cancer Alliance is a 501c3 non profit organization, chartered in 2003. We are the official organization that is responsible for developing and managing the state's 5 year cancer plan. Our success is due in part to our strong network of community partners, like the SC state government, hospitals, colleges/ university, cancer center and public and private corporations.

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and we invite our community to join us for two opportunities to learn more, get connected to resources, and take charge of your health.

The first event is an informative luncheon focused on prostate health, education, and early detection.

Wednesday, September 16th
11:00 AM to 12:00 PM
St. James Health and Wellness, Andrews Annex
411 E Main St., Andrews, SC 29510

Light refreshments will be provided, along with a gift card raffle and other prizes.

The second event is a Men’s Health Community Event hosted by Silver Star Lodge #333 and North Strand Park and Recreation Center.

Saturday, September 19th
9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
North Strand Recreational Center
120 Hwy 57 S., Longs, SC 29568

This free community event will offer health screenings, health education, community resources, wellness information, and prostate cancer education. Men ages 40 to 69 can also receive a free $50 gift card upon completing the prostate cancer education training.

We encourage men, families, caregivers, and community members to attend and share these events with someone who may benefit.

Early detection can save lives. Knowledge, screening, and prevention can make a difference.

The South Carolina Cancer Alliance was honored to present the first Pink Palmetto Project breakout session at the 2026 Immunization Conference.

Using Community Engagement to Advance Cervical Cancer Prevention: Lessons from the Pink Palmetto Project highlighted how trusted community spaces, trusted messengers, and community-based education can help advance cervical cancer prevention efforts across South Carolina. ​

Facilitated by Brenda Thorpe, MPH, Senior Community Engagement Director, the session explored the Pink Palmetto model, a salon-based initiative that equips salon owners and stylists to serve as community health ambassadors while creating opportunities for education around breast health, cervical cancer prevention, screening, and HPV awareness. ​

We were encouraged by the thoughtful discussion and engagement from attendees. Participants shared ideas for expanding community engagement strategies into additional settings and populations, while emphasizing the importance of trusted messengers in advancing health education and prevention efforts.

The session also sparked exciting conversations about future collaboration opportunities, including interest from healthcare and community partners who see value in adapting the Pink Palmetto approach within their own communities.

Thank you South Carolina Immunization Coalition for the opportunity to share, to everyone who attended, participated in the discussion, and continues to support innovative approaches to cancer prevention and health equity across South Carolina.

Celebrating Expanded Access to Breast Health Services in Orangeburg

The South Carolina Cancer Alliance was honored to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new mobile mammogram unit in Orangeburg, an important new resource that will help bring breast cancer screening services closer to women in the community.

SCCA Senior Director Brenda Thorpe attended the event and had the opportunity to connect with Senator Russell Ott, Orangeburg Councilwoman Latisha Walker, and staff from MUSC Orangeburg Health and Clemson Rural Health.

It was also a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with our partners and continue conversations about expanding cancer prevention, early detection, and survivorship resources throughout Orangeburg and surrounding communities.

We are excited to share that SCCA is planning a survivorship event in Orangeburg during the first full week of October. Details will be shared soon, so be sure to stay connected with us for more information.

We are grateful for the partnerships that make initiatives like these possible and for everyone working together to improve cancer outcomes across South Carolina.

2026 Emerging Leaders Summer Institute through the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce

Please join us in congratulating Tyrone Wilson and Theresa Boston, members of the South Carolina Cancer Alliance (SCCA) staff, on graduating from the 2026 Emerging Leaders Summer Institute through the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce!

On August 13, the Greater Florence Chamber celebrated the graduation of this year’s cohort at the Sapphire Room by Finn. Over the course of the Institute, 17 emerging professionals had the opportunity to learn, connect, and grow as leaders while gaining a deeper understanding of the people, organizations, and issues that shape our community.

We are incredibly proud of Tyrone and Theresa for investing in their leadership development and bringing that growth back to their work and the communities they serve. Their commitment to leadership, collaboration, and advancing the health of South Carolinians makes SCCA stronger.

What an incredible time at the MUSC Health Project IMPACT Community Engagement Symposium!

The day began with community networking, followed by a powerful welcome and strategic framing that set the tone for a day focused on connection, collaboration, and lasting community impact.

We also had the opportunity to learn more about MUSC Health, MUSC Hollings Cancer Center, and the incredible impact MUSC is making across the state of South Carolina, from advancing health and innovation to strengthening communities and building meaningful partnerships.

We were especially proud to celebrate our board member, Dr. Marvella Ford, who served as the keynote speaker and was honored with a Community Award for her outstanding contributions and commitment to community impact.

We met so many wonderful MUSC staff throughout the day. Their kindness, warmth, and eagerness to strengthen community engagement were truly encouraging. We are thankful for the opportunity to learn, connect, and network with so many dedicated individuals who are committed to making a difference across South Carolina.

It was a meaningful day filled with inspiration, connection, and collaboration. We look forward to continuing to build stronger partnerships and deeper roots in the communities we serve.
