Some of our members have non-legal backgrounds which include art, private investigators, construction, business, education and management.

The Palmetto Paralegal Association (PPA) was established in 1988 to promote professional development through continuing legal education and to enhance the recognition of the paralegal profession The Palmetto Paralegal Association (PPA), formerly known as the Columbia Legal Assistant Association, was established in 1988 to promote professional development through continuing legal education and to enhance the recognition of the paralegal profession within the legal community. Based in Columbia, South Carolina, PPA's membership is comprised of students enrolled in a paralegal program, paralegals employed by law firms, courts, government agencies, and private businesses, or individuals providing services to the legal community. Our members bring other law-related employment experience to the paralegal profession - as college educators, court reporters, and process servers, just to name a few. PPA members are active in numerous professional, business and charitable organizations. Members have assisted in pro bono projects such as Wills for Heroes, as well as supported charitable organizations such as Sistercare, Harvest Hope Food Bank, many area children's homes with Easter baskets, and paralegals in the military. PPA is the founding member of the South Carolina Alliance of Paralegal Associations (SCAPA), formerly known as the South Carolina Alliance of Legal Assistant Associations (SCALAA) and is a member of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA).

💗 PPA is stepping up for Walk for Life!

Yesterday evening, PPA Board Members Natalia Ertseva-Thomas and Angela Bernardo had the honor of representing the Palmetto Paralegal Association at the 2026 Walk for Life Team Captain Reception at Gather COLA!

It was a beautiful evening of bites, beverages, raffles, and fun as we kicked off the excitement for the upcoming Walk for Life & Famously Hot Pink 5K, benefiting Prisma Health Breast Centers.

Now we need YOU to join us! The PPA Steppers will be walking together on Saturday, October 17, and we’d love to have our members, friends, family, coworkers, and supporters alongside us.

Thank you to Anthony Gentile of Envista Forensics for joining the Palmetto Paralegal Association for our September luncheon and CLE at the Palmetto Club!

Anthony presented “Forensic Cell Tower Discovery,” giving us a fascinating look at how cell site location information can be collected, analyzed, and used in legal matters. He walked us through the technology behind cellular networks, what the data can and cannot tell us, and some of the challenges involved in interpreting it. It was an interesting peek into an area of forensic evidence that continues to play a growing role in the legal world.

We’re grateful to Anthony for sharing his time and expertise with us, and to everyone who joined us for another great afternoon of learning, conversation, and lunch together.

And, as always, the Palmetto Club kept us very well fed! 🍗🍰😉

Earlier this month, members of the PPA Board had the pleasure of meeting with paralegal students from Midlands Technical College for an in-person Q&A session. 📚⚖️

It was a wonderful opportunity to hear from the next generation of paralegal professionals, learn about their goals and hopes for the future of the legal profession, and share some of the knowledge and experience we’ve gained along the way.

There’s something especially rewarding about conversations like these. We may have been there to answer their questions, but we left encouraged by their enthusiasm, curiosity, and fresh perspective.

Thank you to Midlands Technical College and its paralegal students for welcoming us. We’re excited to see where your careers take you! 💙

We had a wonderful afternoon at our August Luncheon & CLE at The Palmetto Club! ⚖️

Our guest speaker, Attorney John J. Hearn of Rogers Townsend, LLC, took us through the history, highs, lows, and ever-changing world of foreclosure law. He brought plenty of wit and humor along the way and managed to make a topic we might not have expected to be quite so entertaining exactly that!

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us, both in person and remotely, and to The Palmetto Club for a fabulous meal and lovely afternoon. And a big thank you to Attorney Hearn for sharing his time and knowledge with PPA!

Good food, good company, and another CLE in the books! 📚⚖️💙

One of my favorite things about the PPA is that we don’t just learn together, we genuinely enjoy spending time together. 💙

Earlier this month, we traded our desks for the Saluda River, floated our way through an afternoon of laughs (and a little unpredictable weather 😄), then wrapped things up at Savage Craft to refuel and unwind. Already looking forward to the next adventure!

Yesterday, the Palmetto Paralegal Association gathered at the Palmetto Club for our July CLE & Luncheon, where we had the pleasure of welcoming William “Bill” Metzger, Jr., Esquire of Robinson Gray as our featured speaker.

Bill presented an informative session on Bankruptcy, walking attendees through the different chapters of bankruptcy, the purpose behind each, and the basic processes involved. From the automatic stay to the distinctions between Chapters 7, 11, and 13, our members gained valuable insight into an area of law that impacts individuals, businesses, creditors, and the legal community alike.

A sincere thank you to Bill for sharing his time, knowledge, and practical experience with our members. We appreciate his willingness to make a complex topic approachable and engaging.

Of course, no PPA luncheon would be complete without a delicious meal from the Palmetto Club, excellent conversation, and the opportunity to connect with colleagues and friends.

Events like these are a wonderful reminder of what makes the PPA so special: quality education, meaningful networking, and a community of professionals who enjoy learning together. We can’t wait to see you at our next event!
