Two young men are dead. Justin Brown, 26, and Ty’Shon Vogt, 25, lost their lives in separate acts of violence days apart. Our community cannot accept this as normal. We call on local and state leaders to strengthen public safety, code enforcement, and responsible development. Our prayers are with their families.

🚨 URGENT: COLUMBIA CITY COUNCIL TO VOTE ON FY 2026-2027 CITY BUDGET TUESDAY 🚨

One of the most important meetings of the year is taking place Tuesday, June 16, and many Columbia residents may not realize what is at stake.

The Columbia City Council is scheduled to consider final approval of the City's Fiscal Year 2026-2027 budget, a spending plan that will influence public safety, homelessness services, water and sewer infrastructure, neighborhood investment, economic development, and city operations for the next twelve months.

Among the major items scheduled for discussion and action:

💰 Adoption of the Fiscal Year 2026-2027 City Budget

🚰 Water and sewer fee and rate changes

🏠 Funding agreements supporting homelessness services, including programs operated through Midlands Housing Alliance, USC Supportive Housing Services, and the Salvation Army

🚔 Multi-million-dollar public safety contracts and service renewals

🌧 Flood mitigation and stormwater infrastructure projects

🏗 Annexation and development proposals affecting multiple areas of the city

📈 Hospitality Tax and Accommodations Tax allocations, including recommendations that affect tourism, community organizations, events, and economic development initiatives

For many residents, discussions about budgets can seem distant or technical. In reality, this is where priorities become policy. This is where decisions are made about who receives funding, which projects move forward, what services are expanded, and how taxpayer dollars are spent.

The meeting comes at a time when Columbia residents continue to face rising housing costs, infrastructure concerns, public safety challenges, and questions about the future direction of growth and development throughout the city.

🚨 COMMUNITY ACTION ALERT: BROAD RIVER ROAD DESERVES BETTER 🚨

Following the recent fatal shooting at The Jerk Hut along Broad River Road, it is time for Richland County Council to take meaningful action to protect residents, businesses, and one of the most environmentally sensitive corridors in Richland County.

We are calling on Richland County Council to:

✅ Establish a Broad River Road Zoning Overlay District

✅ Protect the Broad River watershed and drinking water resources

✅ Safeguard responsible businesses from bad actors that create public safety concerns

✅ Review and limit operating hours for adult-oriented businesses and late-night establishments in sensitive commercial corridors

✅ Investigate locations with repeated incidents involving violence, shootings, and loss of life

✅ Develop stronger accountability measures for businesses that contribute to chronic public safety problems

Broad River Road is more than a commercial corridor. It is a gateway into our community, a critical economic corridor, and a region that borders environmentally sensitive areas connected to our drinking water supply.

Right in the heart of our community.

What you’re looking at is not just an eyesore. It is a public health concern, a safety hazard, and a direct reflection of the neglect that the Broad River District has been forced to endure for far too long.

Today, we took action.

A formal complaint has been submitted to Richland County Government demanding immediate inspection and enforcement under local nuisance and property maintenance laws. We have also escalated this matter to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services for potential violations related to solid waste and environmental hazards.

Additionally, the commercial listing agents at Trinity Partners have been formally notified. This property is currently being marketed while sitting in clear disrepair and non-compliance.

We are calling for:
• Immediate inspection within 72 hours
• Issuance of violations and citations
• A clear remediation timeline
• Full transparency on enforcement actions

This is about more than one property. This is about accountability.

🎉 Congratulations to Columbia High School’s Trailblazing Students 🎉

The Broad River Business Alliance proudly congratulates the outstanding students from Columbia High School who were recently featured in The Columbia Star for earning their FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone Pilot Certification.

We offer special recognition to Columbia High School Junior Joshua Shoulders, who the article notes was the first Richland One student to earn this certification prior to graduating, achieving this milestone in June 2025. Joshua is now joined by fellow Columbia High students Raylyn Steele, Layla Jones, and Cedric Boyles, who have followed in his path of excellence.

All four students are part of Richland One’s BLAST (Building Lasting Aerospace and STEM Trajectories) national defense magnet program, demonstrating what is possible when innovative education meets student determination.

These achievements reflect not only individual excellence, but the growing strength of our Broad River District and its young leaders. We are proud of each of you and look forward to the impact you will make in aerospace, STEM, and beyond.
