Check out the latest recycled foundation we started:

Old Cinder Blocks + 55 Gallon Barrel Drums

We will wrap some chicken wire or similar around the entire base, continue infilling with rubble & dirt, and apply an earthen plaster over the base. Then, we will insulate with sawdust & clay slip, cob a containment ring, and finally set our firebrick hearth.

After that, we’re ready to build the actual oven!

Check out this little clip of a recent sand mold & cob layer for an oven built in Seneca, SC a few weeks ago! We implemented a template for the sand mold to get a “perfect” dome shape. I love the ever-evolving methods, ideas, troubleshooting and connection that earthen oven builds can bring.

We’ve been up to some cool stuff around the state lately- from planning a fall festival, merging technology & clay, building ovens, planning rebuilds, and so much more! I’m excited to continue help supporting resilience in communities.

If you’d like to learn how to build an earthen oven this fall, we are launching a (free) course in collaboartion with the Wood-Fired Community on Skool starting August 15th, as well as facilitating several workshops in October to help you refine your skills. Great for non-profits, farms, churches, schools, co-ops, etc. We will even be hosting an oven building challenge October 6-10th! You can find out more here:
