“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

In 1 Thessalonians, the apostle Paul emphasized encouraging one another. Encouragement was so important that Paul even sent Timothy to be an encouragement to them when he couldn’t be there himself.

Sometimes the journey of following Christ can be difficult and painful, which makes it crucial that we encourage other disciplemakers. Encouraging another disciplemaker may propel them to take the next small step to grow in their relationship with Christ and help someone else do the same.

Through their ministry at Northern Arizona University, Navigators Jonny and Stephanie Yonnie strive to create spaces that feel like a “home away from home” for Indigenous students.

In 2016, Navigators Tom and Delphina Johnson launched Native R.I.S.E. as a high school program offering mentorship to Indigenous students. Their vision was to teach life skills in a culturally affirming atmosphere — one that would provide natural opportunities to share the gospel.

Today, Jonny and Stephanie carry that same vision into their work among students at NAU, where Native R.I.S.E. is now an official university club.
