Unregulated targeted shark fisheries around the world have a well-documented history of undergoing a brief period of exploitation followed by a sudden collapse in yield. These have historically been boom-and-bust endeavors, marked by a relatively short period of booming business followed by a rapid decline in catches and a long period of either slow recovery or no recovery at all. Examples of collapsed shark fisheries include the porbeagle fishery in the North Atlantic, the soupfin shark fishery of California, various basking shark fisheries, and the spiny dogfish fisheries.

Sharks, manta rays, and turtles are essential for the balance and health of marine ecosystems, and the choices we make at the store or when dining out can help protect them.
Here are two consumer best practices:

1️⃣ Check the fishing method. Choose seafood that does not have a track record of killing or injuring sharks as bycatch. Commercial longlining is highly harmful to shark populations, and tuna and swordfish are two common species caught this way.

2️⃣ Avoid exploitative businesses. Skip restaurants that serve shark fin soup or sell shark products, including shark cartilage marketed as a health supplement.

How do scientists study sharks and manta rays in their natural habitats? Fins Attached uses advanced telemetry tools:

Satellite Tags: Help demonstrate long-distance migratory patterns across entire ocean basins.
Acoustic Tags: Are attached to the animal while matching receivers are placed on the sea floor. When a shark gets close, the receiver stores the data transmitted by the tag to determine their residency status in that specific area.
Both types of tags can record depth, temperature, and location information. This science requires a tremendous amount of money, and funding research into sharks for their own sake is difficult.
