Instructor Bio:
Sookkyung Park is a sculptor originally from South Korea and now based in Maryland. After running an Arts & Crafts studio for 25 years, she moved to the U.S. to pursue formal art education, earning an MFA from Towson University in 2023. Working primarily with paper, her sculptural forms explore materiality, transformation, and memory through cutting, folding, and layering.
Artist Statement:
My work reflects on the human experience, shaped by memory, nature, and a search for harmony. Growing up in a divided Korea instilled in me a deep longing for unity and peace, values that continue to guide my artistic philosophy. Through my practice, I explore the coexistence of similarity and difference, fragility and resilience, expressed through form, texture, and structure. Paper is my primary medium—delicate yet strong, humble yet profound. I cut, fold, and bind countless fragments of paper with thread to create sculptural forms that embody interconnectedness. The act of binding carries cultural symbolism, representing human relationships and the unseen threads that connect individual lives. Each work begins with carefully selected paper materials, each with its own softness, density, and tone. Their combination becomes a metaphor for unity within diversity. Through paper, I seek to reveal invisible connections between people, nature, and memory, inviting quiet reflection on the fragile yet enduring threads that bind us.
