🍅 M𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿: 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗞𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝘂𝗽 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆

What started with tomatoes from a backyard garden and a little kitchen experimentation has grown into something with a much more elevated flavor profile.

In 2018, Matt McMonagle and his wife, Lisa, set out to make a ketchup they genuinely loved: one made with better ingredients, without high-fructose corn syrup, and with flavors that take the everyday condiment to another level.

Today, 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗞𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵𝘂𝗽 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 has grown into a full line of ketchups, mustards, mayonnaise, and even ketchup-flavored potato chips. From Classic and Bacon & Bourbon Ketchup to Chipotle and Dill Mayo, there’s something to add a little extra flavor to just about any meal.

Based in Cleveland, the company is bringing its products to grocery stores, independent retailers, restaurants and foodservice businesses throughout Ohio and the Great Lakes region.

And that’s where 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 comes in. By handling distribution and helping Cleveland Ketchup Company reach more markets and smaller retailers, we make it easier for this local business to focus on what it does best: creating great products and building relationships with customers.

Because a stronger local food system is about more than where food is made. It’s about connecting the people who make it with the people who enjoy it, supporting local businesses and keeping more of our food economy close to home.

When Michelle Ajamian and Brandon Jaeger looked around the stalls at local farmers markets, they had one question: Why are there no local vendors selling grains or beans?

That single question led to the founding of 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱 & 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹, which has been offering single-source, Ohio-grown, certified organic heirloom grains and dried beans since 2010.

Shagbark is committed to connecting regional family farmers and their products with local grocery stores, restaurants, schools, and health centers. The mill even offers rock-bottom pricing to food access sites, including schools, pantries, and food banks, so that everyone can enjoy their products.

🌽 The relationship with local farmers is at the heart of Shagbark’s business model. Rather than importing crops to mill and sell, they work with regional, organic farmers to bring locally grown staples to our tables.

Kari Moore, a trailblazer in Northeast Ohio’s local food scene, knows that something as simple as a cracker can turn snack time into a gourmet experience.
Especially when those crackers are handmade in Cleveland with whole, Ohio-grown grains.

Kari founded 𝗟𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 in 2014, after a stint as Slow Food Northern Ohio’s chapter leader and as co-founder of City Fresh, a forward-thinking Community Supported Agriculture program. As a longtime advocate for local food and farming in the Cleveland area, Kari wanted to create a product that would support local growers while giving local eaters a tasty example of what our region’s food system has to offer.

Today, you can find Le Cracker products at retail outlets across Northeast Ohio, including Lake Road Market, Laleure Vineyards, Marchant Manor, Pour W**e & Gifts, Purple Brown Farm Store, Sophie Le Gourmand and Walden Market. They’ve even made their way to Pennsylvania, where they’re available at Pittsburgh’s East End Food Co-op.

At 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, we’re proud to partner with Kari and Le Cracker, helping her get these delicious, ancient-grain sourdough crackers to customers across Northeast Ohio and beyond. 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿: 𝗦𝗺𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻’ 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗲’𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀

“Y𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘧𝘧.”

That’s what people kept telling David Ball whenever he offered them a taste of his homemade BBQ sauce.

David grew up in Houston, where BBQ is serious business. When he moved to Northeast Ohio, he couldn’t find anything that compared to the Texas-style sauce he missed. So, he decided to make his own.

For nearly 20 years, David made BBQ sauce from scratch. In 2019, he decided to turn his longtime hobby into a business.

Today, 𝗦𝗺𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻’ 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗲’𝘀™ makes three Texas-style BBQ sauces—Original, Jalapeño, and Habanero—along with Sloppie Jo sauce and Maui Sauce, a sweet-and-sour skillet sauce that features pineapple.

What started in David’s kitchen has grown into a second career, with products being distributed throughout Northern Ohio and placements in Columbus, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

Now, Smokin’ Bettie’s is expanding again. David recently learned that Kroger will be carrying some of his products, which is a significant new step for a business that started with a homemade recipe and a lot of encouragement from friends and family.

A trip to a local orchard is one of the best ways to celebrate the changing seasons in Northeast Ohio. From fresh-picked apples to perfect pumpkins, it’s a tradition many families look forward to each year. But it’s also an opportunity to support the farmers who grow our food and help keep our local food system thriving.

We’re excited that our partner, 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝗯𝗼𝗻, 𝗢𝗵𝗶𝗼, will soon be welcoming visitors back for fall U-Pick on the farm. Whether you’re planning a trip to visit the orchard or simply stopping by for fresh apples, there’s plenty of ways to enjoy the harvest! To help you bring a little of that orchard experience home, the Dillon family is sharing one of their favorite recipes.

Adapted from a classic 𝘛𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦 recipe, these 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝘀 combine fresh apples, warm cinnamon, and caramel with an oat topping. They're perfect for breakfast, packing in a lunchbox, or enjoying with a warm cup of coffee while you snuggle in your favorite sweater.

🧁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝘀

𝗠𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:
2 cups flour
¾ cup sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
2½ tsp. ground cinnamon
½ tsp. salt
1 large egg
1 cup milk
¼ cup butter, melted
2 tsp. vanilla extract
½ cup chopped, peeled tart apple
12 caramels, chopped

𝗧𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀:
½ cup packed brown sugar
¼ cup quick-cooking oats
3 tbsp. butter, melted
1 tsp. ground cinnamon

𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla. Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just moistened, then fold in the apples and chopped caramels. Divide the batter evenly among 12 paper-lined muffin cups. Mix the topping ingredients together and sprinkle over each muffin. Bake at 350°F for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Zach Miller grew up on his family farm in Lisbon, Ohio, and spent his teenage years working at the neighboring 𝗗𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝘂𝗶𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺. Today, he and his wife, Denise, lease and operate Dillon Fruit Farm, where they grow blueberries, raspberries, cherries, elderberries, blackberries, gooseberries, Asian pears, and apples.

Farm visitors can enjoy a pick-your-own experience or shop for fresh fruit in the farm store. Z𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲 also work with local distributors to bring fresh blueberries and apples to Northeast Ohio farm markets, grocery stores, and the Cuyahoga Valley Farmers Market.

𝗜𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 :

🥛 3/4 cup whole milk
🫒 1/3 cup vegetable or olive oil
🌾 1 1/3–1 1/2 cups tapioca flour (tapioca starch)
🥚 1 large egg
🧂 1/2 teaspoon salt
🧀 1 cup shredded Snowville Creamery 𝗡𝗼-𝗟𝗮𝗰 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗲

𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 : Preheat your oven to 400°F and grease a mini muffin pan. Mix the milk, oil, and egg in a blender until smooth. Add the salt and tapioca flour, blending until well combined. Gently stir or pulse in the shredded cheese, leaving a little texture. Fill the mini muffin cups and bake for about 20 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.
