New Avenues to Independence, Inc.

New Avenues to Independence, Inc. The Path to Dignity and Achievement. In 2000, the Parents Volunteer Association changed its name to New Avenues to Independence, Inc.

A group of dedicated parents founded New Avenues to Independence as the Parents Volunteer Association in 1952 to provide educational, vocational and recreational experiences for children with disabilities whose only option was to live in institutions. Recognizing the social injustice imposed upon individuals with disabilities forced to live in institutional settings, the founding parents were dete

rmined to establish alternatives. As their children grew and their needs changed, the founders incorporated Parents Volunteer Association in 1956 and pursued community integration through group home settings to provide pleasant living environments for individuals with disabilities and promote the development of daily living skills, physical abilities and interpersonal skills. Thus, in 1971, the Parents Volunteer Association became the owner and operator of the first private, non-profit group home for individuals with disabilities in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. In the subsequent five decades, the Parents Volunteer Association continued to grow, purchasing eight additional homes and expanding services to include community-based care, transitional respite, children’s programs, therapies, nursing support, recreational opportunities and Mainstream Housing rental assistance throughout Northeast Ohio. to reflect the changing demographics of the individuals served and the array of services provided. In 2005, returning to our roots, New Avenues established a Day Services program that expanded in 2007 to include vocational services linking individuals with disabilities with meaningful employment opportunities from area employers.

What an incredible day at Cedar Point! 🎢

We had a blast riding to new heights, basking in the sun, and having some fun! Last week, a group from our day program created lasting memories together while enjoying everything the park had to offer!

Thank you to The Arc of Ohio for donating park and meal tickets for the day! We are so grateful to partner with an organization whose mission aligns so closely with ours. Thank you!

Sunny skies with lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!

With beautiful blue skies and warm air beaming down on us on Monday, we decided there’s no better way to spend the gorgeous spring day than going to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo!

Upon arriving at the zoo, we enjoyed a picnic under the pavilion, then we divided into two groups to explore the zoo! We learned about elephants, primates, koalas, fish, cheetahs, and lions, to name a few. Thank you to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for having us.

With high school students enjoying proms across the country, the Addison Branch of the Cleveland Public Library decided to put on its own “Senior” Prom, but their original vision quickly changed after Andrew Davis, New Avenues to Independence’s Senior Manager of Inclusion Services, reached out.

“I was looking for opportunities for us and stumbled across the CPL page and events. I noticed the Senior Prom and thought I would reach out and see if some individuals with DD could go. Worst they can do is say no!” and “they actually agreed,” shared Andrew.

The Prom selected its prom king and queen by picking names out of a hat. “Sarah S. actually won prom queen and was given a sparkly cowboy hat,” says Andrew! Our individuals had a great time busting their favorite moves on the dance floor, sipping their favorite drinks, and munching on delicious pizza.

Andrew also gives “a big shout out to the organizer, Ashley Martinez! We also got to talking, and she loves doing arts and crafts with seniors at senior centers. I asked if she would potentially be interested in coming to us once or twice a month, and she agreed to that as well! She will be coming starting in June to do some crafting!”

Thank you to the Addison Branch of the Cleveland Public Library for having us! We had an incredible time.
