Leading up to our highly anticipated exhibition, A Clearing: Word, Image, Body, over the coming weeks we’ll be providing a preview of the show by showcasing select works.

In Marcus Morris’s Beloved (2023), the character from Toni Morrison’s novel of the same name arrives to the hollow carrying roses. This photograph belongs to the artist’s larger series, Elegance Is Refusal, which aims to reimagine the past by making images of q***rness, specifically Black q***r mothering. The phrase comes from editor Diana Vreeland, who elaborates, “Elegance is innate. It has nothing to do with being well dressed. Elegance is refusal.” As Morris explains, “elegance to me [is] a feminine of ‘cool,’ long associated with Black culture…[I] consider Black q***r and femme identity as a source of power and refusal in a White supremacist patriarchal capitalist system.”

Here are shots from our day with the Oberlin College Connect Cleveland group! Many of these first year Oberlin College students had never done printmaking before, but they were all eager to learn how the presses worked. Program Manager Chandler Mack gave the students a tour of Zygote’s facilities before teaching them how to use the Vandercook 4T letterpress to create an “Oberlin College Connect Cleveland” poster to commemorate their college orientation and experience at Zygote Press. We hope they will come back and visit soon!

Join us at Zygote Press for a guided open studio session which will explore how the
core aspects of printmaking fittingly embody some of the emotions and visual language
that Morrison uses in her novels. This PAY-WHAT-YOU-CAN AND OPEN TO THE
COMMUNITY guided studio is for artists from any discipline, as well as anyone who
wants to explore the world of book arts, poetry and printmaking. Join us for a day of
connection and creativity. Participants can make a hand-made journal using our
Chandler and Price platen press and print a quote by Toni Morrison. Customize your
very own zine that will help guide you through our current exhibition and print a
Morrison-themed letterpress poster to take home. Explore printmaking methods, make
new friends, and take home a hand-bound journal for your own writings. Appropriate for
art adventurers of all levels. This workshop is part of the Beloved: Ohio Celebrates Toni
Morrison yearlong tribute. Workshop runs Sunday, September 13th from 10am-2pm.

We’re delighted to share more about our upcoming exhibition, A Clearing: Word, Image, Body !!

The exhibition brings together the work of Tatyana Atkinson, Marcus Morris , Euzhan Shaba@sillyfruitstudio io , Benjamin Smith , and solo . Through photography, digital collage and illustration, printmaking, sound, installation, and social practice, the exhibition explores how contemporary Ohio artists give visual expression to the themes, ideas, and literary strategies that define Toni Morrison's work.

Inspired by the clearing in Morrison's Beloved (1987), the exhibition examines the clearing as a space where liberation can be imagined and practiced. Rather than existing outside the world, Morrison's clearing is created within it—a place where other ways of remembering, relating, and becoming are made possible. Extending this idea into the visual arts, the show invites visitors to consider how artists create spaces that make room for histories, voices, and possibilities too often obscured or denied. To read the full press release and register for the opening, see the link in our bio

Co-curated by Anthony Huffman , 2026 Keithley Fellow in Community-Engaged Art History, and Scout Bach .2224 , Gallery Coordinator at Zygote, A Clearing: Word, Image, Body is presented as part of Ohio Celebrates Toni Morrison, a yearlong initiative organized by Ohio Humanities and Literary Cleveland.

🗓️ Exhibition Dates: September 10–October 30, 2026
🎟️ Opening Reception: Thursday, September 10, 5:30–8 PM (RSVP via Eventbrite required)

A little rain couldn’t stop us from showing love for our amazing Zygote Press interns. This past Sunday, staff and interns hit the bowling lanes at Mahall’s in Lakewood for some friendly competition – can you guess who won?

We are so grateful for ALL of our brilliant, hardworking interns who keep Zygote running! Interested in joining the intern team? Keep an eye out for a Zygote Press INTERN OPEN CALL later this month…

Please join us in welcoming Aja Joi Grant to the 2027 PROOF Fellowship Cohort!

The PROOF Fellowship offers non-printmaking artists from BIPOC communities an opportunity to learn a variety of printmaking techniques including silkscreen, monoprint, relief, intaglio, lithography and RISO.

Aja Joi Grant is a photographer, printmaker and fiber artist documenting human stories of identity, liberation and cultural preservation in the Great Lakes region. Through her lens she documents members of her community and their methods of imagination, memory, movement and resistance as they navigate systems and build new paradigms for the future. Her practice expands from photography into printmaking and fiber art, exploring afro-surrealism through texture and color. She was the 2025 Cleveland Arts Prize Verge Fellow, 2023 Karamu Room in the House Fellow, and 2022 Cleveland Foundation Equity in the Arts Fellow. She has worked in art education for the last 8 years, teaching photography, alternative process, and printmaking.
