Cleveland Council on World Affairs

Cleveland Council on World Affairs CCWA's mission is to inspire engagement in international affairs and world cultures through education, citizen diplomacy and public dialogue.

The Cleveland Council on World Affairs (CCWA) is dedicated to fostering global awareness in Northeast Ohio. To do so, CCWA coordinates programs with the U.S. Department of State that bring hundreds of international visitors – professionals, students, and government leaders – to the Cleveland area every year. In addition, CCWA hosts a variety of dynamic speakers to engage the local community and also works closely with area schools to bring the world to Ohio students.

Episode 8 of CCWA Summer School tackles a hard but essential chapter in history: America's response to the Holocaust, and Cleveland's role in what came after.

Educators Dave Lubinger, from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School, and Liz Sisley-Novak, from the Maltz Museum, Respect for All Humanity, unpack how the U.S. government responded - and sometimes failed to respond - to the atrocities of N**i Germany, from restrictive immigration policy to the diplomats and soldiers who defied the odds to save lives. They also trace how Cleveland became home to Holocaust survivors, and why this history still matters today.
