We are a nonprofit Family Resource Center serving families & childcare providers in Butte County. Need childcare? We can help! (Need help paying for childcare?

We can help with that, too!) Valley Oak Children's Services is a private, non-profit assisting thousands of Butte County families each year. The agency's mission is "Touching the HEART of the community through Health, Education, Advocacy, Resources and Training activities." VOCS invests in tomorrow's leaders today. Giving young children and families a healthy foundation early creates success in school and in life. Healthy families = Strong Communities. VOCS strengthens communities:

Children: Quality child care provides children the critical skills needed to be the next generation of productive Californians

The one your child wanted to hear Every. Single. Night.

The one you could probably recite front and back from memory by the time they were done with it. 😄

November is Family Literacy Month, so we want to know: What is (or was) THE book at your house?

Was it "Goodnight Moon?" "The Very Hungry Caterpillar?" "Pete the Cat?" Something completely unexpected?

💀 Today begins Día de los Mu***os, a time to remember and honor loved ones who are no longer with us.

For many families, these days are filled with stories, photos, favorite foods, flowers, and traditions that help keep memories close and pass family history from one generation to the next.

At Valley Oak Children’s Services, we know how meaningful those connections can be for children - and for all of us. Hearing stories about the people who came before us and celebrating the love that continues through family traditions are some of the ways we help children feel connected to their families, their history, and the people who helped shape who they are.

To all who celebrate, we wish you a meaningful and beautiful Día de los Mu***os. 🧡

Candy? Check. Costumes? Check. Clocks? Don’t forget those too! ⏰

After all the Halloween fun tonight, remember to set your clocks back one hour before bed. Daylight Saving Time ends overnight, which means we get an extra hour Sunday morning!

And for families with little ones, we’ll just hope the kids get the memo about that extra hour of sleep.

🎃Happy Halloween from Valley Oak Children’s Services! 👻

Whether your evening includes trick-or-treating, costumes, pumpkin carving, a favorite movie, or simply handing out candy at home, we hope your family has a fun and safe night.

And remember: Halloween doesn’t have to look the same for every child. Some will want to visit every house on the block, and some may be perfectly happy with three pieces of candy and pajamas by 7:30. 😄

However your family celebrates, we hope it’s a great one, and that you manage to find YOUR favorite candy in the trick-or-treat stash before it disappears. 🍫

🎃 Halloween is almost here!

Before the costumes go on and the candy bags come out, a little preparation can help keep the night fun and safe for everyone.

A few reminders for families:
✨ Make sure costumes fit well and don’t block your child’s vision
🔦 Carry a flashlight or add reflective tape for better visibility after dark
🚗 Remind children to stop, look, and stay close when crossing streets
🏠 Visit well-lit homes and stick to familiar areas when possible
🍬 Check candy before little ones start digging in
📱 Make sure older children know the plan, where they’re going, and when to check in
🐶 Keep pets secure and comfortable as trick-or-treaters come and go

And remember, Halloween can be a lot for young children. Loud decorations, masks, crowds, and dark streets may feel exciting to some kids and overwhelming to others. It’s okay to take breaks, skip a house, head home early, or celebrate in a way that works best for your family.

A little planning can go a long way toward making Halloween a fun night for everyone. 💛

🎨✂️ Provider Resource Hub pickup ends Friday!

If you registered for the October Provider Resource Hub and haven’t picked up your materials yet, this is your reminder to stop by our office before Friday, October 30. 💛

Your classroom and activity supplies are packed and waiting for you!

Materials will no longer be available after the pickup window closes, so be sure to swing by before the end of the week.

And if you missed October registration, keep an eye out for our December Provider Resource Hub!

Some little ones love Halloween. Others would prefer the giant skeleton stay several houses away. 🎃

Costumes, masks, loud decorations, strangers at the door, dark streets, and lots of excitement can be a lot for young children, especially when they don’t quite know what to expect.

A little preparation can help. Try the costume on ahead of time, talk about what trick-or-treating will look like, and let your child know it’s okay to skip a house, take a break, or head home when they’ve had enough.

And if costumes or trick-or-treating just aren’t their thing this year? That’s okay too. Halloween can be a movie at home, decorating pumpkins, handing out candy, or celebrating in whatever way feels fun and comfortable for your family. 💛

There’s no required amount of spooky fun. Let them enjoy Halloween at their own pace. 👻🎃

📚 What if one book could spark a love of learning?

At Valley Oak Children’s Services, our Literacy Library helps put books directly into the hands of local children and families, because sometimes the right story really can open a door.

Families are welcome to stop by for books during our regular office hours, Monday through Friday. From board books for little ones to stories for growing readers, there’s always something waiting to be discovered. 💛

🧡 Today is Unity Day, part of National Bullying Prevention Month, a day centered on kindness, inclusion, and standing together against bullying.

At Valley Oak Children’s Services, those values matter every day.

Children learn so much about friendship from the adults around them. We can help by talking about kindness, noticing when someone is left out, teaching children how to include others, and reminding them that being a good friend sometimes means speaking up when something doesn’t feel right.

Little conversations can make a big difference.

Today, and all year long, we stand with families, educators, and communities working to help children feel safe, valued, and included. 🧡

🌱🍎 It’s Farm to CACFP Week!

This week, childcare programs across the country are celebrating the connection between healthy food, local agriculture, and early learning, and here in Butte County, that connection feels pretty close to home.

The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) helps participating childcare providers serve nutritious meals and snacks to the children in their care while receiving reimbursement and program support.

Farm to CACFP is a fun way to bring that to life. Providers might serve a seasonal fruit or vegetable, plant a few herbs, read a book about farms, or talk with children about the foods grown right here in our community. 🌽🍅🌿

Those little experiences can make healthy foods feel more familiar, more interesting, and a whole lot more fun.

We love seeing the creative ways our CACFP providers help children build healthy habits from the very beginning.!
