We are a proud member of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN), a statewide network of organizations committed to providing the best capture and care for oil-affected wildlife in California.

Throughout the year, members of our team participate in specialized OWCN trainings and preparedness exercises, building and maintaining the skills and experience needed to respond when wildlife needs us most.

That commitment to preparedness is being put into action during the ongoing oiled wildlife response efforts in the Los Angeles area, where trained OWCN responders from our organization have joined fellow responders from across the state to support wildlife recovery, care, and rehabilitation efforts.

We stand alongside our fellow member organizations in this collaborative effort and grateful for the dedication of the teams making this work possible.

A heartfelt thank you to Pacific Gas and Electric Company for their generous grant support to the North Valley Animal Disaster Group!

Because of PG&E’s investment, NVADG has purchased a zero-turn mower to help conduct STRATEGIC FUEL MITIGATION around livestock and large animal sheltering areas at the Camelot Equestrian Center. This critical equipment will help reduce wildfire risk, create safer defensible space, and better protect animals during emergencies and disasters.

Partnerships like this strengthen our community’s resilience and help ensure we are prepared to safeguard both people and animals when wildfire strikes.

A generous THANK YOU to the amazing team at Wild West Horse Rescue for hosting our NVADG Large Animal Handling Training!

Our volunteers spent an incredible hands-on day building essential disaster response skills, including:

Safe handling and haltering techniques
Daily large animal care best practices
Medical triage and field assessment

Training opportunities like this help ensure our team is prepared to respond safely, confidently, and compassionately when disasters impact large animals in our community. We are grateful for strong community partners who make this work possible!

However, sometimes, a temporary shelter will be needed. Our Small Animal Disaster Shelter Training prepares volunteers and responders to safely care for displaced pets during emergencies — from setup and intake to handling, reunification, and compassionate care. https://www.nvadg.org/preparation-training/

Through hands-on training, participants gain the skills needed to support dogs, rabbits, birds, reptiles, pocket pets, cats, and other small companion animals when communities need it most. Prepared volunteers help bring calm, comfort, and hope during uncertain times.

When disaster strikes, preparation can make all the difference—especially for our animals. Thanks to the generous support of Pacific Gas and Electric Company, the North Valley Animal Disaster Group is now equipped with limited number of pet disaster kits designed to keep animals safe, secure, and cared for during emergencies. Until exhausted, these kits will be distributed during our numerous outreach events leading up to fire season.

Each kit includes essential supplies to help pets through the chaos of evacuation and displacement—because their safety matters just as much as ours. From water bottles and carriers to blankets and basic care items, these kits ensure that no animal is left unprepared.

We’re grateful for partnerships that strengthen our community’s resilience and help protect the animals we love. Together, we’re building a safer future—one pet at a time.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING FOR SMALL ANIMALS IN A DISASTER?

When disaster strikes, even the calmest animals can become fearful, unpredictable, and at risk. Cats may lash out, dogs may ignore commands, and small animals can panic or escape. That’s why specialized training matters.

From reading stress signals and using safe, species-specific handling techniques, to preventing disease spread and managing organized shelter operations—trained responders are essential to protecting both animals and people.

Recently, the North Valley Animal Disaster Group has faced ongoing challenges with a difficult—and at times hazardous—trailer exit from our trailer storage facility at the Chico airport, occasionally delaying our ability to deploy critical mobile disaster resources. We extend our sincere thanks to Santos Engineering and Excavating for generously removing and filling in a barrier that had hindered our operations for years.
