Two cancer diagnoses. One powerful reason to keep running. 💗🏃🏻‍♀️

This Sunday, Team Lynn Sage runner Grace Lombardo will take on her first Chicago Marathon after surviving breast cancer not once, but twice.

Diagnosed with breast cancer at just 36, Grace underwent a bilateral mastectomy and chemotherapy. Five years later, after celebrating being cancer-free, she learned the cancer had returned. She faced two more surgeries, 16 rounds of chemotherapy, and 30 radiation treatments before reaching no evidence of disease once again.

Now, she’s ready to run 26.2 miles through Chicago in support of the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation and the research that makes progress like this possible.

“I want to prove to my body, that tried to take me out twice, that I’m still in control.”

Every mile this Sunday will be a reminder of how far Grace has come, the people she carries with her, and the power of research to change what’s possible.

Today, we’re expanding what’s possible for breast cancer research in Chicago.

Lynn Sage is proud to welcome Endeavor Health as the fourth institutional partner in the Chicago Breast Cancer Research Consortium, joining UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center, Northwestern Medicine’s Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and RUSH MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Convened and funded by Lynn Sage in 2024, the Consortium brings leading cancer centers together to conduct collaborative clinical trials and translational research across institutions.

With Endeavor Health joining the Consortium, that network is growing, expanding the reach of innovative research to more patients and communities across Chicagoland.

Four institutions. One shared mission. A new model for collaboration.

For Lynn Sage, October is about more than awareness.

It’s about action.

It’s about investing in the scientists pursuing the next breakthrough. Training the next generation of specialists who will care for patients. Bringing institutions together to accelerate clinical trials. And ensuring promising research has the support it needs to move forward.

Lynn Sage has been named a Top 100 Finalist for the Chicago Innovation Awards-selected from 356 nominees —and now we need your vote for the People’s Choice Award.

Our nomination recognizes the Chicago Breast Cancer Research Consortium, which brings together the region’s leading cancer centers to collaborate on groundbreaking research, accelerate discovery and expand access to innovative clinical trials.

By bringing institutions together through shared infrastructure, data, and resources, the Consortium is breaking down traditional institutional barriers to enable more collaborative, multi-site breast cancer research and reach more patients across Chicagoland.

Senior Investigator Spotlight: Dr. Alex Psihogios, PhD 🔬💗

At Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Lynn Sage Senior Investigator Dr. Alex Psihogios is exploring how digital tools and peer support can help young women stay on track with breast cancer treatment.

Her research focuses on endocrine therapy, a type of hormone therapy that can significantly reduce the risk of breast cancer returning when taken consistently. But for many young women, managing treatment over several years can be challenging, especially when side effects, busy lives, and a lack of age-appropriate support get in the way.

With support from Lynn Sage, Dr. Psihogios is developing a personalized smartphone app paired with peer-led social media support. The goal is to provide tailored guidance, encouragement, and connection to help make treatment feel more manageable and less isolating.

By meeting young women where they are, this research could help more patients receive the full benefit of their treatment and reduce their risk of breast cancer recurrence. 💗
