The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the USA and has an opening for a Staff Accountant at our national headquarters in the heart of Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood.

The Staff Accountant will maintain financial records and reports and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This is an upwardly mobile position.

Primary responsibilities:

• Assists the Controller and Senior Accounting Manager with the day to day, monthly and year-end operations of the Accounting Department including budget review, preparation, and analysis.
• Maintains general ledger including:
o Account analysis
o Reconciliation of balance sheet accounts.
o Prepares journal entries.
o Prepaids reporting and maintenance of related schedule
o Fixed asset reporting and maintenance of related schedules
o Prepares monthly and year-end accruals
o Benefits reporting and allocation
o Records changes in investments.
o Performs bank reconciliations monthly.
• Accounts receivable functions including:
o Generating reports in Solupay and manipulating data.
o Importing prorated dues report from the membership system. Manipulating the data.
o Records journal entries to report revenue to each entity and state dues payable. Tracks payments.
o Per Capita billing
o Intercompany billing
• Interface with auditors to ensure a timely year-end.
• Assists with preparing schedules, etc.
• Prepare reports which require extensive analysis and judgment in preparation.
• Initiate actions based on reports prepared and/or problems identified.
• Participate in/lead improvement activities including researching software and making recommendations.
• Distribute monthly financial statements including monthly balance sheets, income statements, budget comparisons and related documents.
• Resolve complex questions and account issues.
• Prepare state sales tax returns when applicable and determines account distribution for voucher.

Requirements and qualifications:
• Must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field plus 2 years of related experience or a Master’s degree in accounting or a CPA.
• Strong knowledge of Excel and of Microsoft Office environment.
• Knowledge of GAAP.
• Familiarity with mail merges.
• Familiarity with importing and exporting data.
• Strong math and accounting skills.
• Must have general knowledge of office administrative procedures, and knowledge of use and operation of standard office equipment.
• Good phone skills; organized; sets priorities; meets deadlines; able to multi-task; carefully proofs own work.
• Must have high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
• Work requires attention to detail in composing and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.
• Must be able to work individually as well as participate on teams.
• Consistently demonstrate ability to take the initiative to make decisions/choices without direct supervision.
• Interest in the nonprofit sector.
• Ability to travel on occasion.

The Elks National Foundation has an opening for a Programs Coordinator in the Scholarships Department at its headquarters in Chicago. The Programs Coordinator is responsible for frontline customer service with volunteers and scholars, coordinating the scholarship disbursement process and program promotion. This is a great opportunity to help students realize their academic dreams, while honing volunteer management and database skills.

The primary Programs Coordinator duties involve the following:
 Act as the frontline contact to volunteers, scholars and the public by fielding phone and email inquiries.
 Coordinate all administration aspects of the four ENF scholarship programs, including processing verification of enrollment forms, issuing scholarship checks and monitoring scholar compliance.
 Assist with promoting the program and sharing scholar stories, including on social media, through the ENF website, and printed newsletters.

Qualified candidates must:
 Have a Bachelor’s degree.
 Demonstrate strong organization, writing and communication skills.
 Be proficient in Microsoft Office, experience with databases, and social media platforms.
 Have a strong attention to detail.
 Be a self-starter with excellent follow through.
 Work independently on multiple projects as well as in a team environment.
 Set priorities and meet deadlines.
