For the third consecutive year, the Durban Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International (CSCI), in partnership with the The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, will be hosting a free and open-to-the-public celebration in honor of Nelson Mandela International Day on Saturday, July 11, 2026 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm!

This year’s Spirit of Nelson Mandela theme, “Making a Difference for Others: 67 minutes of service", is a global call to action encouraging people worldwide to dedicate 67 minutes of their time to community service and public good. The initiative honors Nelson Mandela, representing the 67 years he spent fighting for social justice, equality, and human rights.

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR THE SPIRIT OF NELSON MANDELA 2026 YOUTH ESSAY CONTEST!📝

For the third consecutive year, the Durban Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International (CSCI), in partnership with the The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, will be hosting a free and open-to-the-public celebration in honor of Nelson Mandela International Day on Saturday, July 11, 2026 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm!

This Memorial Day, we honor those who never came home.

World Business Chicago was proud to step up with our Chicago Sister Cities International team in support of its Kyiv Committee, welcoming active-duty soldiers from Ukraine to Chicago for the Soldier Field 10 this past weekend.

We extend our deepest respect to all who served and to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice — in the United States, in Ukraine, and wherever freedom has required courage beyond measure.

Their memory lives on through our gratitude.

Earlier this week, the Osaka Committee of CSCI, in partnership with the Japanese Culture Center - 日本文化会館, tabled at the Chicago Chicago Cubs Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month Celebration. Community members of all ages visited the table to fold cranes and learn about this collaborative initiative before enjoying the game. Cranes for Peace is bringing together schools, community organizations, and institutions to promote peace, community solidarity, and cross-cultural connection through the Japanese tradition of senbazuru (1,000 cranes).

It is an accessible, creative, and meaningful project that mobilizes Chicago’s residents toward a shared vision of peace. The final installation will showcase cranes from every participating group and include signage acknowledging our partners. By participating, you help create a visual symbol of community unity and the ongoing pursuit of peace.

On April 29, the Prague Committee of CSCI was thrilled to welcome world-acclaimed Czech jazz singer, Martina Barta, to a sold-out dinner performance at Cafe Prague. Accompanied by pianist Tommaso Perazzo, Ms. Barta dazzled the audience with a variety of international songs, while also sharing stories of her unique musical roots and Czech background. Cafe Prague provided a welcoming ambiance for the audience members who had the chance to mingle with additional special guests, which included internationally recognized economist Tomáš Sedláček; People in Need CEO Šimon Pánek; and Consul General of the Czech Republic in Chicago, Jakub Utěšený and his wife, Monika. Proceeds from the event will support future projects of the Prague Committee, including those related to student exchanges and cultural events.

In 2024 and 2025, the Shenyang Municipal People’s Government, in collaboration with Shenyang Normal University, hosted an exchange program for Chicago students passionate about learning the Chinese language and culture. This year, they are continuing the program, Hello Shenyang, offering students an opportunity this summer to explore traditional Chinese culture and world heritage through an immersive summer camp experience in Shenyang and Beijing.

Program Details:
Application Deadline: April 29, 2026
Dates: June 24 - July 7, 2026
Locations: Shenyang & Beijing, China
Participants: 20 students (high school or college)

The exchange will host five modules designed to provide a well-rounded exploration of Chinese culture, language learning sessions, special lectures about the culture of Liaoning Province and Shenyang City, complemented by hands-on activities like paper cutting, Chinese painting, Peking opera, and tea ceremonies. The Cultural Heritage module introduces traditional techniques such as sugar paintings and tours of iconic landmarks like the Great Wall, Shenyang Imperial Palace Museum, and the Temple of Heaven. Additionally, participants will enjoy Interactive Communication sessions, fostering cultural exchange with Chinese and international students.

Cost: Students are responsible for airfare and visa fees. All other ground expenses are covered by the host.

The Prague Committee of CSCI invites you to an evening of Jazz featuring world renowned singer and musician, Martina Barta on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 from 6:30 - 9:00 pm. In Chicago for the UNESCO International Jazz Day, Martina Barta will perform an intimate concert ahead of International Jazz Day. Additional guests of honor include Šimon Pánek and Tomáš Sedláček.

Event Details:
🎟️Ticket Cost: $100 + taxes and fees
🇨🇿Ticket Includes: Dinner provided by Cafe Prague and live music performance by Martina Barta
📍Location: Cafe Prague, 6710 W Belmont Ave, Chicago, IL 60634

Ticket sales for this event help fund the Prague Committee’s programs including student exchanges between Whitney Young Magnet High School and Gymnázium Nad Alejí in Prague, as well as events for visiting artists, authors, and musicians from Prague. The committee also works in partnership with the Czech Consulate on special events, like Czech Heritage Week and a welcome reception for Czech runners at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
