Today, as we celebrate what would have been Bernard Jeffrey McCullough’s 69th birthday, I want to honor his remarkable life and the lasting impact he made on all of us.

For more than 34 years, Dr. Rhonda stood by Bernard’s side, supporting his career and his commitment to giving back. Bernard was a gifted entertainer and a pioneer who opened doors for future generations. His talent brought laughter to millions, and his generous heart inspired a legacy of service that continues through the Bernie Mac Foundation.

Dr. Rhonda, your strength and dedication to carrying Bernard’s vision forward are an inspiration. The love and partnership you shared remain a powerful part of his story.

Thank you for welcoming me into the Bernie Mac Foundation family and entrusting me with the role of Chairman of Special Events. It is a privilege to work alongside you and the Bernie Mac team as we continue honoring Bernard’s legacy.

Today, the Bernie Mac Foundation proudly celebrates what would have been the 69th birthday of our beloved founder and Chairman Emeritus, Bernard Jeffrey McCullough, lovingly known around the world as Bernie Mac.

Bernie Mac was so much more than a legendary comedian and entertainer. He was a husband, father, grandfather, friend, visionary, and trailblazer whose remarkable talent, unforgettable presence, and fearless authenticity changed the entertainment industry forever. He brought laughter into millions of homes and created moments that continue to make people smile today.

Behind the laughter was a man with an incredibly generous heart and a genuine concern for others. Bernie understood the importance of using his voice and platform to bring attention to causes that were often overlooked. His personal journey with sarcoidosis inspired a mission that continues through the Bernie Mac Foundation today.

Although Bernie is no longer physically with us, his purpose remains at the heart of everything we do. His legacy lives through our continued commitment to raising sarcoidosis awareness, educating communities, supporting sarcoidosis warriors and their families, and encouraging the research needed to move us closer to better treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

His influence can still be felt throughout comedy, entertainment, and every community touched by his generosity. His courage, honesty, work ethic, and determination continue to inspire new generations of performers, advocates, leaders, and dreamers. Bernie showed the world that it was possible to remain true to yourself, uplift others, and leave a lasting impact far beyond the stage.

Today, we honor the man behind the laughter. We celebrate his life, his accomplishments, his compassion, and the love he shared with his family, friends, supporters, and fans around the world. We also recognize the extraordinary legacy that continues through Dr. Rhonda R. McCullough and the entire Bernie Mac Foundation family.

Diagnosing sarcoidosis can take more than one test. In some cases, a healthcare provider may recommend a biopsy, where a small tissue sample is examined for granulomas, the clusters of inflammatory cells commonly associated with sarcoidosis.

Because sarcoidosis can affect different organs and sometimes resemble other conditions, a biopsy may help doctors confirm the diagnosis and rule out other possible causes.

Every sarcoidosis journey looks different. If a biopsy is recommended, ask your healthcare team what they’re testing for, what to expect, and how the results will guide your care.

Knowledge brings awareness. Awareness brings advocacy. 💜

💜 Did you know? For some people living with sarcoidosis, managing the condition can also mean managing the effects of long-term treatment.

Corticosteroids such as prednisone are commonly used to help reduce inflammation, but extended use can come with side effects. Because every case of sarcoidosis is different, healthcare providers may consider other medications or treatment approaches when appropriate.

The important takeaway: stay informed and stay involved in your care. Ask questions, discuss side effects with your healthcare provider, and never stop or change prescribed steroid medication without medical guidance.

Knowledge is an important part of the sarcoidosis journey. 💜

💜 TIP OF THE WEEK FOR OUR SARCOIDOSIS WARRIORS

Sleep is more than rest. It’s part of taking care of your body.

Living with sarcoidosis can come with fatigue, inflammation, pain, stress, and low energy, and sometimes even a full night of sleep doesn’t make the fatigue disappear. Still, getting consistent, quality rest gives your body the time it needs to recover and helps support your immune system, mood, concentration, and overall well-being.

😴 Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night when possible.
And remember: listen to your body. Some days may require a little more rest than others.

To every sarcoidosis warrior: rest is part of the journey, too. 💜

Bernie Mac’s legacy continues through his unforgettable contributions to entertainment, his deep love for Chicago, and the ongoing mission of the Bernie Mac Foundation. We are proud to see his life and impact celebrated alongside other legendary figures.

We are also pleased to share that Executive Director Mary Ann Grossett and President and CEO Rhonda McCullough will attend the event on behalf of the Bernie Mac Foundation.
