To undocumented students: while we’re still assessing the full impact of this decision, know that the ruling does not mean you should automatically drop your classes, leave your college, or pay a new balance immediately.

Undocumented students who grew up in Illinois, graduated from our schools, and call this state home deserve access to in-state tuition and financial aid. Full stop.

This recent district court ruling in favor of the federal government creates yet another barrier for undocumented young people to pursue their dreams of a higher education. With college being more unaffordable than ever, we should be removing barriers to college, not adding new ones, for all students in Illinois. When every student has the opportunity to learn, graduate, and build a future here, our entire state grows stronger.

To all undocumented students reading this: know that you belong in higher education. There is a dedicated group of educators, advocates, policymakers, and community members across Illinois who will never stop fighting to remove barriers to your college success. If you’re at a public 2- or 4-year institution in Illinois and need support, please reach out to your Undocumented Student Liaison.

Today’s Supreme Court ruling affirmed what we already knew: babies born in the United States are citizens by right.

“Today’s decision is a relief for immigrant families, especially expectant parents who were navigating the uncertainty and fear that their child would be stateless, without protection or access to critical services and programs. Birthright citizenship gives these children, many of them Latino, the full protection of citizenship and opens a door to economic mobility and access and participation in our democracy.

“However, we cannot fool ourselves into being complacent; our civil rights and our democracy are at stake. Days ago, this Court ruled that the federal administration can turn away asylum seekers at ports of entry, and end legal protections for hundreds of thousands of TPS holders, which is an affront to our laws and our commitment to human rights. This administration has shown us that they are willing to test the clear protections of the U.S. Constitution. And perhaps more alarming, some members of the Supreme Court have shown us that they are willing to support this reversal of longstanding policy.” -Linda Xóchitl Tortolero, Latino Policy Forum President & CEO

The Constitution is so clear and so strong on birthright citizenship because of the vision and sacrifice of the Black abolitionists who fought for the Fourteenth Amendment, guaranteeing that everyone born here is a full citizen and entitled to equal rights. No president or executive order can take this away.

“We have to do it because we can no longer stay invisible. We have to be visible. We should not be ashamed of who we are. We have to show the world that we are numerous. There are many of us out there.” -Sylvia Rivera

Pride has always been about visibility, not for visibility’s sake, but because existing openly in a world that too often demands silence is an act of resistance.

For LGBTQ+ Latine communities, living our truth means carrying the fullness of who we are with orgullo and without apology. It means refusing to shrink ourselves in the face of discrimination, exclusion, or efforts to erase our identities. Every act of authenticity, every expression of joy, every declaration of who we are challenges systems that were never built to fully embrace us.

This Pride Month, we honor those who fought to make our visibility possible and celebrate those who continue that legacy today. Our existence is powerful. Our pride is powerful. And together, we show the world that we are here, we belong, and we are unapologetic.
