Safe Humane Chicago PALs Introducing the Safe Humane Chicago PALs: Program dogs, Ambassador dogs, Lifetime Bonds dogs.

Note that all shelter dogs at our partner shelters who participate in Safe Humane programs will now be referred to as Safe Humane PALs. A Safe Humane PAL (Program, Ambassador & Lifetime Bonds dog) is a dog who has been assessed by a designated Safe Humane trainer to be appropriate for participating in at least one of the following:

*A group setting with Safe Humane staff or volunteers and partici

pants who have had no or minimal exposure to dogs

*A group class in which Safe Humane staff or volunteers and participants will work with the dog(s) on improving canine manners and socialization skills

*A group class or a one on one session with a designated Safe Humane volunteer or trainer to work on more challenging canine manners and socialization skills

A Safe Humane PAL may be a Program Dog, Ambassador Dog, or Lifetime Bonds Dog (which is a sub-category of Program Dog set apart because of the significance of the Lifetime Bonds programs) as defined below:

Program Dogs include but are not limited to shelter dogs who may be characterized by at least one of the following:

· are longer-term OR

· have been assigned law-enforcement numbers (RD #) for criminal cases OR

· have suffered cruel treatment or serious neglect OR

· participate in Safe Humane programs (e.g., Manners, Skills (C.L.A.S.S.), Community Collaborations, Corporate Group and Volunteer Days, Collaborative Justice, Lifetime Bonds)

Ambassador Dogs are dogs who have homes and have been approved to participate in our programs connecting people with dogs in a positive, safe environment. Lifetime Bonds Dogs are Program Dogs who have been approved to work with youth in our Lifetime Bonds programs, specifically providing opportunities for dogs and people who have been impacted by trauma to help one another.

💔 DESPERATE PLEA FOR SUNSHINE 💔

Back in the kennels depressed & confused.

Sweet Sunshine has been let down again. After a heartbreaking past of being abandoned and starved, she thought she had finally found peace in a foster home. But her person tragically fell ill and had to be hospitalized, leaving poor Sunshine without a place to call home. Despite her progress and recovery, Sunshine was once again left behind—confused, scared, and heartbroken.

She found a second foster, but things took another sad turn. Despite being clear about her manageable food aggression—a result of her traumatic past—one small mistake changed everything. Someone left a bag of treats out, easily accessible, and Sunshine reacted as we knew she would. Because of this, her foster family decided to return her.

Now, Sunshine is back in the kennels—the very place that breaks her spirit. This gentle soul is shutting down, spending her days stressed, anxious, and wondering why she can’t catch a break. After everything she’s endured, it’s heartbreaking to see her back in a confined space, which feels like a living nightmare for her.

We love Sunshine and KNOW she’s an incredible dog. She’s not aggressive, just a sweetheart who’s been let down by humans more than she ever should’ve been. All Sunshine needs is a loving home with a little patience. She’s come so far, but she needs someone who will give her the space and care to continue growing into the amazing dog we know she can be. With just a bit of understanding and time, she will shine like the ray of sunshine she is meant to be.

Please, can anyone find it in their hearts to open their home to Sunshine? She’s not meant to live out her days in a kennel. She’s meant to be part of a family, to be loved and nurtured. Don’t let her story end in sadness—give her the chance she so desperately deserves. 🌞💔
