Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) are tracking us each day across Illinois, taking images of license plates of ordinary community residents—likely including you. HB 5151: the ALPR Act, creates statewide, common sense standards and regulations for when and how law enforcement agencies and government entities can use ALPRs. We are pleased to work alongside chief sponsor Nicolle Grasse on this measure to fight unchecked, mass surveillance in Illinois.

United States v. Matthews was filed after the Illinois State Board of Elections refused to turn over its unredacted voter registration file, a file that contains sensitive personal data about millions of Illinois residents including each individual’s full name, date of birth, address, driver’s license number and partial Social Security number. We must continue to fight the Administration’s lies about supposed voter fraud, and its attempt to suppress voting by sowing doubt and confusion about our elections. This case is one part of that fight.

No one – not even ICE officers under this Administration – has the right to recklessly and violently careen through our neighborhoods and act with impunity toward people – no matter their immigration status. Across the country, ACLU affiliates are fighting back against the Trump administration’s illegal conduct by filing claims under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), one of the few legal tools available to seek financial compensation for wrongdoing by federal government employees. Through this coordinated effort, ACLU affiliates represent dozens of people and families who are seeking justice for the harm they experienced at the hands of federal immigration agents.
