Libraries in Indiana rely on E-Rate for affordable internet. And Indiana communities rely on those libraries. The FCC's new E-Rate proposals could cut that connection: https://www.indystar.com/story/entertainment/arts/2026/09/03/fcc-e-rate-program-librarians-worried-about-funding-library-internet-1996-telecommunications-act/91383539007/

The FCC wants a "top-to-bottom" review of a program funding library internet access, sparking fears of service cuts for many communities.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month! We're kicking off this year's celebration with honorary chair Laufey, who wants you to stop in to your library and sign up for a library card.

A library card hits all the right notes, no matter what your tastes are. Check out a classic story or hit shuffle and try something new. Find harmony at your library’s book clubs, movie nights, crafting classes, and author talks. A headphone kind of day? Find your focus in a study room or vibe out in a cozy nook. Compose your future with new skills in your library’s makerspace or check out instruments and tools in the Library of Things.

Whatever rhythm you find yourself in, there’s a seat in the front row at the library for you.

“Dolly Parton represented the very best of America," said ALA President Maria McCauley. "We want to make sure that Dolly’s vision, that reading is for everyone, becomes a reality. That’s something that we can all carry forward in memory of Dolly.”

Dolly Parton spent decades gifting books to millions of children. Following her death at 80, the Dollywood Foundation plans to carry her mission with Imagination Library forward.

ALA is heartbroken at the passing of country music legend, cultural icon, and champion of literacy Dolly Parton.

Dolly’s award-winning Imagination Library initiative, inspired by her father’s inability to read or write, has put hundreds of millions of free books into the hands of children across America and was considered by her to be one of her greatest achievements.

“We’re giving books to kids who wouldn’t have a chance to get them otherwise,” she told American Libraries in a 2018 interview. “A lot of people think this is just for poor children—it’s for all children. It’s important to get books into the hands of any child that we can.”

ALA was proud to confer Dolly with an honorary lifetime membership, the Association’s highest honor, in 2023 for her lasting impact on librarianship, libraries, and the communities they serve.

Dolly was also part of ALA’s Celebrity READ campaign, in which she holds a copy of 'The Little Engine That Could.'

“I’ve always related to that book because I’m the little engine that did!” she said.

Thank you, Dolly. ❤️

Libraries across the country have the same message: their communities rely on the internet E-Rate provides. The FCC's proposals to cut the program would have wide-reaching consequences. Learn more: https://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2026/0820/fcc-e-rate-libraries-schools

Use our tools to tell Congress to and submit your own public comments in support of the program: ala.org/erate

A program called E-Rate has helped expand public internet access for 30 years. As the Federal Communications Commission challenges whether the subsidies are still needed, schools and libraries say cuts could leave them with hard choices.
