Today for we recognize Hon. Thurgood Marshall, civil rights lawyer and Associate Justice for the U.S. Supreme Court from 1967-1991. He was the first African American U.S. Supreme Court Justice, appointed by Lyndon B. Johnson. Before his appointment, he lead the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and was a prominent figure in the fight to end racial segregation in public schools.

Today for we recognize Christina Swarns, attorney and Executive Director of the Innocence Project. Prior to her position at the Innocence Project, Swarns served at the Office of the Appellate Defender and at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. She is most well-known for arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court in Buck v. Davis, challenging the explicitly racially biased evidence in a Texas death penalty case.

Today for we recognize Benjamin Crump, attorney specializing in civil rights and personal injury cases. He is most known for his civil rights work and representation of families in high-profile wrongful death cases. Crump has also partnered with other attorneys to argue larger-scale cases and hold rallies on behalf of communities affected by the Flint water crisis.

Today for we recognize Jane Matilda Bolin, the first Black woman to serve as a judge in the U.S. She was also the first Black woman to graduate from Yale Law School and join the New York City Bar. Bolin was an activist for education and children’s rights, including working to racially integrate child services to further equity in the probationary system and publicly funded childcare agencies.
