Toileteer Highlight - Ald. Daniel La Spata: After years of pushing for public restroom access, Chicago’s first standalone, self-cleaning public toilet is coming to the Polish Triangle at Milwaukee, Ashland, and Division, right above the Division Blue Line.

Building on a 2021 pilot effort with Ald. Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez, this JCDecaux installation addresses a major gap, with fewer than 500 truly accessible public restrooms citywide, and is designed to serve parents, older adults, disabled residents, and unhoused neighbors in one of Chicago’s busiest transit corridors.

What if public restrooms actually cleaned the seat for you?
In a new study, Lee, Takesh*ta, Shiinoki, Okabe, and Jung (2026) design an automatic toilet seat-cleaning system that quietly wipes the seat after each use, with no extra steps for the user and no manual scrubbing for staff.

The system’s primary objective is “to keep the toilet seat hygienic while maintaining user comfort and practicality,” targeting the toilet seat as “a primary surface for unavoidable indirect contact and heightened contact-infection risk.” It follows a design policy that “does not cause stress or inconvenience to the user,” while making cleaning visible through a transparent fluid container and viewing windows so people can confirm it’s working.

Because the system is designed for curved, elliptical toilet seats that require under-lid cleaning, it points toward practical retrofitting of existing bathrooms, not just brand-new builds, bringing smarter hygiene into the restrooms we already use every day.

Imagine this innovation across the USA, in airports, schools, shelters, transit hubs, and parks, places where restroom dignity and public health matter most.

World Toilet Day message: American Restroom Association (ARA) Says America’s “Toilet Wars” Should be Over

Catonsville, Maryland, USA – “The U.S. is having such a stupid debate regarding gendered toilets right now,” says Steven Soifer, Ph.D., co-founder of the American Restroom Association and adjunct professor at Adelphi University’s School of Social Work. “The way around this issue has always been to install single-occupancy, all-gendered toilets (SOAG),” he continued. “Gender neutral toilets with a common sink area have always been the way to go, and smart businesses have picked up on this trend, especially given the proclivities of the Gen Z generation.

According to a recent QS Supplies survey (https://www.qssupplies.co.uk/flushed-with-fear.html), fully 83 percent of Gen Z employees in the U.S. experience anxiety in the workplace bathroom, and almost 10 percent have considered quitting their job because of it. Moreover, ¾ of all U.S. and U.K. employees suffer from workplace bathroom anxiety. “This is absolutely astonishing,” said Professor Soifer.

Wednesday, November 19th, is the UN-recognized World Toilet Day, which was established 10 years ago (2014). “On this day, the U.S. should note that toilets are a human right, and that everyone should have easy access to well-designed toilets,” comments Professor Soifer: “Installing SOAG bathrooms everywhere will help resolve public restroom issues both at the workplace and in the public arena,” said Soifer.
