Young Associates Board Young Associates Board (YAB) is a tax-exempt, non-profit affiliated organization of Ann & Robert H.

Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (formerly Children's Memorial Hospital) that is committed to providing hope for children with brain tumors. Established in 2000 as the junior board of the Gus Foundation, the YAB conducts fundraising events aimed at young professionals and organizes a variety of service projects that directly benefit children with brain tumors and their families.

We’re so excited to introduce you to our 2026 Patient Champion, Ellie.

At just six years old, Ellie was diagnosed with a pilocytic astrocytoma, a brain tumor wrapped around her optic nerves. Within days of her diagnosis, she underwent neurosurgery at Lurie Children’s. When chemotherapy was unable to stop the tumor’s growth, her care team helped her access a targeted therapy that ultimately changed the course of her treatment.

Today, Ellie is a thriving high school student who loves basketball, singing, playing piano, spending time with family, and cheering on Chicago sports teams. She describes herself as “very loud, pretty outgoing, and very hard working,” and hopes people see her for more than her diagnosis.
“I want people to know we’re not just a kid with cancer. We’re our own person.”

Ellie’s journey is a powerful reminder of why we come together for the Race Against Cancer. Every dollar raised helps ensure children facing cancer have access to expert care, innovative treatments, supportive programs, and groundbreaking research that make stories like Ellie’s possible. 💙🎗️

A special shoutout to our incredible Race Against Cancer team on the 2025-26 exec!

Y- your reason to YAB
A- if you could be any animal, what would you be and why?
B- what’s one item on your bucket list?

Kevin Hinders
Y – I’ve always loved volunteering, and YAB gives me an amazing opportunity to give back to a place that supports children and families when they need it most.

A – An alligator! I love being in the water, and being an apex predator would definitely make me the king of the swamp.

B – Skydiving! It’s always been on my bucket list, and I’d love to experience the adrenaline rush and incredible views

Matt DiNolfo
Y- Volunteering is super important to me as so many people are in need. I personally have seen the effects strong care Luries has done for people close to me so anyway I can help is great!

A- A Honey Badger. One of the most durable animals and super smart in the wild so I think I could live long in the wilderness.

B-See the northern lights that illuminate the entire sky, I think it would involve also being in a super cool area in order to see them!

Lyndsay Herrera
Y –  I joined YAB because my younger sister, Leah, was treated for a brain tumor at Lurie Children’s. The incredible care and compassion our family received inspired me in so many ways. Today, I’m working as an oncology nurse at Lurie, caring for patients and families who are on similar journeys.

A – I would be a dolphin because they’re cute , playful, and social. They always seem to find joy in life.

B- One of the biggest things on my bucket list is traveling to New Zealand and Australia. I’ve always wanted to experience the incredible scenery, wildlife, and outdoor adventures those countries have to offer!
