Fact 💡 or Fiction ❌? Understanding Code Refresh

We're exploring claims we’ve heard from community members about climate and zoning during Richmond’s zoning rewrite process. Claim #2️⃣ we're exploring: Increasing density and the height of buildings will prevent solar development and block sunlight from roofs.☀️⚡

✅ What we know: Density isn’t preventing solar development in Richmond: costs and access are.

The City should strive to streamline the deployment of residential solar energy to low-income households and rental properties through financing, workforce development programs, and taking advantage of wins at the General Assembly this year, such as shared solar and balcony solar (set to go into effect in 2027!).

C3's Richmond team has worked out of Gather Arts District office for just over a year now, and we love it. So when we had a chance to meet one of the company's owners, we were happy to offer a free energy walkthrough to see if there were ways to help reduce costs, resulting in a whopping 25% reduction in electricity use compared to the prior year!💡🥳

Our visit uncovered one of the most common problems we see in buildings of all sizes and types: thermostats that run the HVAC when the building is unoccupied, and other settings that could be changed to reduce energy use.🌡️😵‍💫

To provide proper support we called in the controls experts: Michaels Energy, made available at no cost to qualifying Dominion commercial customers via their Building Engagement Program. Not sure if you have a programmable thermostat, or not sure if it's programmed? We can come take a look, make an appointment: https://www.theclimatecollaborative.org/climate-services

Clearing the Air will examine the different pathways Charlottesville could take toward a clean, affordable energy future grounded in equity for ratepayers. Join us as we discover what actions are being taken by cities both at home in Virginia and across the country, as well as uncover opportunities and challenges unique to Charlottesville.

Register for our first webinar in this series, Clearing the Air: Exploring Cville's Clean Energy Transition, where C3 and our decarbonization study partners will explore Cville's energy systems analyzing both what has been done and what it might take to get us to a more sustainable, fair and affordable energy future. ⚡

We're exploring claims we’ve heard from community members about climate and zoning during Richmond’s zoning rewrite process. Claim #1️⃣ we're exploring: Increasing housing density will lead to more cars, less parking, and more pollution.

✅ What we know: Zoning and land use reform, coupled with investment in multi-modal transportation, can reduce pollution, reliance on cars, and make our city more interconnected. And yes, that means less traffic!

📣 C3 is looking for high-school students who want to learn about local climate justice issues and solutions, and help educate our community. In this year’s 6-week summer program, interns will partner with Light House Studio to create a film showcasing the connections between electrification and clean energy.📽️ During the internship, there will likely be other opportunities for the interns to get involved with local climate justice work, and we will make those available to the interns.

This is a paid internship for Charlottesville and Albemarle County students to begin the week of June 22nd and end July 31st. Rising 10th-12th graders are encouraged to apply.

⚡❗BIG NEWS⚡❗: We officially have an energy efficiency program in RVA!!💡🥳

Last night, Richmond City Council UNANIMOUSLY(!) voted to pass a program designed to reduce energy bills and the cost of living for households struggling to keep up with rising costs! We are so excited to see the City also pass two other wins for the future of Richmond's energy use:
💰 Funding for an Energy Efficiency Coordinator position within the Office of Sustainability
✂️ Cutting the full $500k from the Gas Utility New Business fund that supports natural gas expansion

This is exciting start to improve energy efficiency throughout the City and bring Richmond closer to it's climate goals! We are so grateful to the community and our partners whose support made this program possible! Let's do this Richmond! 💚⚡
