Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation is launching Public Square, a new civic conversation series bringing notable voices to Charlotte for real talk on the issues shaping American life.

The series opens October 29 at Carolina Theatre with "The American Story: 250 Years of Democracy through Debate." The first conversation, "Freedom and Responsibility: What We Owe Each Other," features John Hood and Melissa Murray, moderated by Carol Quillen, exploring how individual liberty and collective responsibility shape what we owe one another.

Presented in partnership with the Durham and Morton families, Elon University School of Law, Foundation For The Carolinas, and WFAE.

With the opening of Main Library in Uptown Charlotte on the horizon, Charlotte will be at the forefront of library architecture. Architect Snøhetta designed the building around a modern vision of public libraries as central gathering places for their communities — an approach also seen in Rotterdam's new Central Library.

"The building’s design by architecture firm Van den Broek en Bakema envisioned the library not as a traditional book repository, but as a vertical public square. “They imagined an open place of exchange of knowledge, where you meet people, where the city comes together — a kind of plaza for the city,” said Albert Richters, partner architect at Powerhouse Company."
