This Sunday is International Day of the Girl Child. There’s real progress on girls' education, with much more to be done. An estimated 130 million+ girls don’t go to school, including in Afghanistan. That’s why we keep at it – girls' education – where we work in countries in East Africa. The UN and a host of analyses make the case that investing in education for girls is central to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Thanks to a kind donor, a “suite” of tools for technology-based teaching was just purchased in Rwanda. Laptops, power cables, and adapters will be shared by upper primary STEM teachers at six schools in Kinoni Sector, Burera District. Shoutout to US teacher Amanda Eskildsen, who guides our Rwanda team to design interactive STEM lessons, and NC State College of Engineering students and faculty who completed a tech needs assessment at the schools.

Then, now . . . Myers Park HS students in Charlotte, NC, are using tech to support the 10th Anniversary of the Walk for Wisdom! Here’s their Apple Pay fundraiser link (ow.ly/qKn550ZTv9F) to raise $10,000 to equip South Sudan’s Nyarweng Primary School with 6 laptops, 15 tablets, a digital STEM curriculum, and teacher training. How is the student team inspiring you? They’re recruiting 700 teachers and students to join on Oct. 13th for a 45-minute lesson about the need for education in the world’s newest and most fragile country and walk the school track for 45 minutes, too. It’s the average time it takes students to walk from home to the Nyarweng School each day.

The saying at the CGI Annual Summit in NY is “you’ll chat with the most interesting people in the hallways and workshops.” True! Our friend, CGI guest attendee, and Stanford U. senior Kuot Kiir met Dr. Chelsea Clinton and CNN Hero Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, founder of a free school for children orphaned by AIDS that evolved into primary, secondary, and university support for 2,000+ students in Uganda; microloans and housing support for grandmothers; and an active system of free healthcare for community members.

And that cynicism has come from their pervasive feeling that love cannot be found; 2) [Movies . . . ] tell us that everyone wants love but that we remain totally confused about the practice of love in everyday life; 3) Profound changes in the way we think and act must take place if we are to create a loving culture; 4) Everyone wants to know more about love; and 5) We learn about love in childhood. Dormitories matter to education and literacy in Tanzania and across Africa. Exciting to see progress – thanks to a generous, long-time donor – on the Fruitful Orphanage and Day Care Centre near Arusha. Means 50 students who attend the on-campus Shine School will have a place that provides consistent meals, electricity, opportunities to rest, and mentoring so they can focus on studies!

From 7th grade through university, we raise funds for merit scholars in Rwanda and South Sudan. Inspiring to know a cyclist who’s spent 12 months riding thousands of miles to prepare for a cycling trip from Oregon to Maine, USA. Beautiful - he’s not doing this just to raise money, but he’s drawing attention and would welcome donations to support “Teach My People” - a nonprofit after-school and summer program that also provides scholarships from 1st Grade through university in South Carolina, USA.
