NewGen Peacebuilders That number rises to 40 percent or more in some countries. On the other, young people are most often perceived as likely victims or perpetrators of violence.

NewGen Peacebuilders is an award-winning peace education, training and mentoring program that equips people to build peace and repeat the peace in their communities, countries and the world. Mahatma Gandhi famously said, “If we are to reach real peace in this world … we shall have to begin with children.” Today, there are nearly 3 billion young people under the age of 30 in the world, about 30 percent of the global population. Yet peace, the most cross-cutting of all global aspirations, is often absent from formal and informal educational frameworks. On one hand, non-profit and for-profit leaders point to the potential of youth as tomorrow's global citizen leaders. There are few meaningful opportunities for youth to receive systematic skills development and education for peacebuilding. With a focus on high school and university students, NewGen Peacebuilders programs include interactive workshops, live virtual guest speakers, and design and implementation of team peace projects. NewGen Peacebuilders trains and equips students to:
Truly understand drivers of conflict and peace; Imagine innovative solutions that create change; Take action to address an issue impacting quality of life in a community or communities. The result is empowered young people who are equipped to actively resolve conflict and build bridges for the rest of their lives.

What’s a NewGen Peacebuilders Fellow? It depends. Josh Aguiar – with a BA in Peace Studies from Goucher College – supports peace project teams in our Design Sprints with research and data analysis. Tejaswani Gupta at USC focuses on a strategy to make peacebuilding education and simulations easily available to university students around the world. Ashmi Trivedi from Duke U. is contributing knowledge and expertise to an Arts & Peace online module and student competition available in the US and Italy. Stephen Crenshaw – senior, U. of Alabama at Birmingham – is helping imagine a community corps of young adult peacebuilders in different cities.

Announcing we have a new country manager in Lebanon – Rony Zgheib. Serendipitously and simultaneously, the American University of Beirut (AUB) Suliman S. Olayan School of Business welcomed him as a participant in the 6-day executive education program CEDAR (Core Executive Digital Agility & Resilience). Nearing the goal of 1,000 trees planted in 2026 toward an overall goal of 10,000 Trees for Peace in the Gudele West section of South Sudan’s capital city of Juba! Our NewGen Peacebuilders country coordinator Nelson Jacob Jada has overseen plantings of 50 to 150 seedlings and saplings at specific primary and secondary school sites. Our Exec. Director and two team members came home inspired by leaders and ideas from last week’s CGI Annual Summit in New York. Thanks to Cure Blindness Project CEO K-T Overbey (https://cureblindness.org/who-we-are) for raising our awareness that 90% of the world’s blind population lives in low- and middle-income countries. South Sudan, a country where we have worked for 15 years, has one of the highest rates of blindness globally, with an estimated 2.0% affected according to the World Health Organization.

Did it! Exec. Director Patricia Shafer just “graduated” 24 project leaders from first cohort of Bridges to New Horizons: Integral Projects Leadership - Lebanon. Testament to young professionals who persevered to completion even after war broke out in February. Six team leaders presented in the plenary, including Marie-Lynn Boursali re: expanded strategy for the Embrace Mobile Mental Health Clinic (MMHC). Project exhibits featured impact of the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) Eight Pillars as a key framework - whether the project is about peace education in schools (Rasha Hlayel), bridging circles (Tarek Said), waste management innovations (Ralph Choueiry), access to legal services (Wissam Khaled), or, or, or . . .

Incredible three days at CGI Annual Summit in NY (Sept. 21-23). Exec. Director Patricia Shafer and two team members worked with hundreds of other attendees to explore the future of humanitarian response; UN agendas on both women and youth, peace & security; and what a big Commitment to Action and catalytic partnership could do. Of course, pros and cons of AI were discussed. It helped to hear speaker perspectives from the President of Kosovo, Prince Harry, several US governors, and more. Thanks to President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, Dr. Chelsea Clinton, and staff for more than two decades of bringing together a community of doers.
