NewGen Peacebuilders

NewGen Peacebuilders That number rises to 40 percent or more in some countries. On the other, young people are most often perceived as likely victims or perpetrators of violence.

NewGen Peacebuilders is an award-winning peace education, training and mentoring program that equips people to build peace and repeat the peace in their communities, countries and the world. Mahatma Gandhi famously said, “If we are to reach real peace in this world … we shall have to begin with children.” Today, there are nearly 3 billion young people under the age of 30 in the world, about 30 per

cent of the global population. Yet peace, the most cross-cutting of all global aspirations, is often absent from formal and informal educational frameworks. On one hand, non-profit and for-profit leaders point to the potential of youth as tomorrow's global citizen leaders. There are few meaningful opportunities for youth to receive systematic skills development and education for peacebuilding. With a focus on high school and university students, NewGen Peacebuilders programs include interactive workshops, live virtual guest speakers, and design and implementation of team peace projects. NewGen Peacebuilders trains and equips students to:
Truly understand drivers of conflict and peace; Imagine innovative solutions that create change; Take action to address an issue impacting quality of life in a community or communities. The result is empowered young people who are equipped to actively resolve conflict and build bridges for the rest of their lives.

Poet, artist, educator, and the first non-European Nobel Laureate in Literature, Rabindranath Tagore believed that true joy is found in serving others. His words remain a timeless reminder that meaningful action and service – large and small – can transform both communities and ourselves.

NewGen Peacebuilders alum Reniah Curry has just been selected as a NewGen Peacebuilders Fellow. The Howard University undergrad will focus on action research related to hydroponic gardening and a nutrition education program for youth and families in Washington, DC. Reniah’s peacebuilding potential stood out early when she finished one of our programs as a 9th grader in Boca Raton, FL. “Deja vu” – glad to have her back six years later!

“A Reminder to Lead with Heart at the Center” - the theme of Exec. Director Patricia Shafer in her keynote to the Rotary District 5080 Peace Summit with Rotarians from the US and Canada. A few key points: 1) there’s an unconscious bias that people who talk about peace, love, and heart aren’t “serious”; 2) heartfelt service means to move well beyond pity/empathy to what Dr. John Paul Lederach calls Compassion in Action; 3) Heart at War, Heart at Peace concept from the The Arbinger Institute distinguishes between seeing people as objects, tools, and obstacles and seeing other people as having their own legitimate hopes and needs. She also shared this video of two certified NewGen Peacebuilders selected into a prestigious innovation hub for the peace project “Art for the Heart.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaJViO4RxhQ
