On Aug. 20, we honor St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a 12th-century monk who helped build the Cistercian order, now known as the Trappists.

St. Bernard was a leader in monastic reform, founded Clairvaux Abbey, and wrote influential works on humility and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He played a key role in Church councils and advised popes throughout his life. Bernard’s legacy includes founding over 160 monasteries and being named a Doctor of the Church.

We’re grateful to Asheville City Schools for welcoming us to the Summer Wellness Pop Up at Isaac Dickson Elementary on July 19! Over 100 community members came together to connect, learn, and support one another. Catholic Charities was honored to join other local nonprofits in sharing resources and providing essential supplies to families in need.

Events like these remind us of the power of community and the importance of caring for our neighbors. Thank you, Asheville City Schools, for inviting us to serve and support your families!

Mission Moment: Making a House a Home

Even after individuals and families secure safe housing, the journey isn’t over. Without beds, towels, kitchenware, and other essentials, a new space can feel empty and far from home—and for many, furnishing these spaces is financially out of reach.

Our furniture ministry and The Making a House a Home program bridges this gap, providing household furniture (beds, sofas, tables) and Welcome Home Kits with basic kitchen and bathroom supplies. By turning empty rooms into welcoming environments, we help neighbors truly settle in and begin the next chapter with dignity and comfort.

On the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we see these words fulfilled.
Her humility was met with glory and her ‘fiat’ was met with a special place in Heaven. The Assumption of Mary is one of the four Marian dogmas of the Church.

Today we celebrate the Feast of Saint Maximilian Kolbe. He became a Franciscan in 1907 and devoted his life to fostering devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary as a priest, a publisher and a founder of the "City of the Immaculate." Sentenced to hard manual labor at Auschwitz, he offered his life in exchange for that of an innocent man. He is remembered for his prophetic words, "Hatred is not a creative force. Only love is a creative power."

We’re grateful to Haywood Christian Ministry and Healthy Blue for hosting an incredible Summer Community Wellness event on July 17 at Haywood Commons in Waynesville!

Together with other local nonprofits, we connected families in Haywood County to vital resources, health information, and community services. Attendees received free A1C screenings, blood pressure checks, and essential supplies—including diapers, toiletries, and hygiene products—distributed by Catholic Charities. The day was filled with uplifting music from Mix 96.5’s Melanie Wilkinson (our Spirit of Hope emcee!), exciting raffles, and the excitement of a community working together.

Whether you are 18 or 88, creating or updating a legal will helps ensure your wishes are honored, including how your belongings are shared, who will have guardianship of your children, and your wishes for end-of-life care. A properly written will can also make things easier for your loved ones by helping reduce costs and prevent administrative delays.

You can create a legal will with the help of an attorney or a trusted online service. Taking action this month helps ensure your wishes are honored, protects your loved ones, and gives you an opportunity to create a lasting legacy through a planned gift to the Church.
