International Day of the Girl celebrates young people who see a way to make a difference and go for it. For Julianne, that started with "two very big things." Her love for her grandmother, Diane, and her love of dance.

Her grandmother, better known as Nanny, lived with Alzheimer's. Her family first noticed signs of the disease when "she forgot the simplest words — a lot," Julianne shared. Those changes were signs of Alzheimer’s. Her family joined their first Walk to End Alzheimer's in 2024. After losing Nanny, Julianne knew she wanted to do more.

That is when Julianne came up with her own way to help. She hosted Dancin' for Diane with her Varsity Kickline team, raising over $16,000 (and counting) for Walk to End Alzheimer’s. "I thought that if I could fundraise for the Association while doing the thing I love most, it would be a win-win."

One of Julianne's favorite moments with her Nanny was a trip to a drive-thru when she was 7 years old. She recalls spilling her ice cream all over the car and instead of Nanny getting upset, the two "just couldn't stop laughing."

On International Day of the Girl, we're grateful for Julianne and all the girls that are determined to make a difference in our world. Join Julianne and participate in a Walk to End Alzheimer's near you at alz.org/walk. 💜

Calling all social media lovers in West Virginia! 💜

The Alzheimer's Association West Virginia Chapter is looking for a volunteer to help manage our West Virginia Walk to End Alzheimer's Facebook Group. If you enjoy connecting with people online and have about one hour a week to give, this could be a great fit.

As a volunteer, you will help share Chapter updates and resources, encourage members to share their own stories, spotlight upcoming events and programs, and keep the space welcoming and supportive for everyone.

No special experience is needed beyond being comfortable on Facebook and having a warm, friendly voice. Our staff will provide training and guidance along the way, and you can do it all from home on your own schedule.

Interested? Email [email protected] to learn more. Know someone who would be perfect for this? Tag them below!

The Alzheimer’s Association West Virginia Chapter is pleased to welcome Sheila Hall as its new program manager! 💜

Sheila brings experience in senior living, health care, community relations, marketing, admissions and relationship development. She has spent much of her career serving seniors, families and health care professionals throughout the region, including leadership positions in assisted living, skilled nursing and health care-related business development.

Sheila also brings a personal commitment to the Association’s mission. In her previous work in senior living, she served as an Alzheimer’s fundraising chairperson, helping lead her team in raising more than $8,000 to support the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

As program manager, Sheila will help expand the reach of Association programs and services across West Virginia, strengthen community partnerships and connect individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s and all other dementia with education, information and support.

“I look forward to building relationships across West Virginia, increasing awareness of the resources available through the Alzheimer’s Association, and helping ensure that families know they do not have to navigate this journey alone.”

Jazmin Martinez has always believed that education can change lives. She has spent her career designing programs for vulnerable communities; understanding the difference it can make when people feel seen, heard and are equipped with the right resources.

When she discovered the Alzheimer's Association, she knew immediately she had found a place to put that purpose to work. Now, Jazmin volunteers as a community educator, leaning into her professional expertise to deliver educational programs to families in her community.

For Jazmin, volunteering has been a transformative experience. Her most treasured moments are the visits to community centers where Hispanic families gather. "The warm welcome from the people and their heartfelt gratitude after every presentation mean the world to me."

To anyone considering volunteering, her message is simple: "There is a spot for everyone here. The environment allows you to grow and make a real difference right away."

💜 During Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month, we're grateful for community educators like Jazmin, who bring empathy and dedication to every family they support. To learn more about volunteer opportunities with the Alzheimer's Association, visit alz.org/volunteer.

Dementia doesn’t always begin with memory loss.

Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) can affect personality, behavior and the ability to speak or understand language. Behavior changes are often the first noticeable symptoms of its most common form.

FTD refers to a group of disorders caused by progressive nerve cell loss mainly in the brain's frontal lobes, the areas behind your forehead, and/or the temporal lobes — the regions behind your ears.

Greater awareness can help us better support people facing FTD. During , learn about the different types, symptoms and available support. https://alz.org/ftd

When Congress enabled Medicare coverage for routine mammograms, screening rates soared ⬆️ and breast cancer deaths plummeted ⬇️. That early investment led to earlier detection, better outcomes and improved quality of life. This is a “mammogram moment” for Alzheimer’s. Tell Congress to make early detection the standard in care by supporting the bipartisan Alzheimer’s Screening and Prevention (ASAP) Act: bit.ly/4kRjDXU.

Angel J. Montes, DHCA, is changing the way brain health and dementia information reaches the people in his community who need it most. Not by creating new programs, but by integrating awareness into the public health systems his community already knows and trusts.

Through the Alzheimer's Association's Healthy Brain Initiative Road Map Strategist Program, Dr. Montes and his team at the City of Laredo (TX) Health Department have embedded brain health into the fabric of everyday life, making it a priority for their community. They have added brain health messaging to city utility bills, built dementia education into Food Handler License training, and introduced dementia response training for new Laredo Police Department officers

“Even a single point of awareness can help someone feel more prepared, more supported and less alone,” he shared. “Meaningful public health work often requires patience, consistency and a willingness to keep an idea moving forward.”

💜 During Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month, we're proud to recognize leaders like Dr. Montes, whose work is building a healthier and more dementia-capable community. To learn more about the Association's public health work, visit alz.org/publichealth.
