This year's theme, "Juneteenth Brings Balance to America's Celebration of Freedom," gives us a chance to reflect on how we make freedom a reality for all.

This begs us to look honestly at where barriers remain. New ALICE* data for New Jersey shows that Black households continue to face financial hardship at disproportionately high rates (55%, compared with 33% of White households), even while working hard to support themselves and their communities.

Data fuels action. Join us in telling the full story of financial hardship in your community. Together, we can expand opportunity and ensure freedom is fully realized for every New Jersey family.

Please be advised that our offices are closed today, June 19th, in observance of Juneteenth.

*ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, and represents households with income above the poverty level but less than the cost of basics.

We’re happy to welcome Dione Francis of Turner Construction Company to our Board of Trustees.

“I joined the United Way family because of the amazing social economic research they perform, share, and leverage to raise awareness of and to help raise and direct funds to programs that support struggling families known as ALICE,” said Dione, who also serves on our United Way Women United steering committee.

Thank you, Dione, for helping advance our work to improve life for ALICE families — those who are struggling to afford life’s basics.

We’ve got awesome news

ALICE at Work has received Healthier Somerset’s Healthy Workplace Recognition Award in the Innovation category.

ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) workers are an essential part of every community. They may be our friends, neighbors, family who work but still cannot always afford the basics.

For ALICE families, quality child care can make work, stability, and peace of mind possible.

Last week, our United In Care team visited Little Rainbow Kids with Assemblywoman Marisa Sweeney, Liz Crowley of the F.M. Kirby Foundation, and United Way of Northern New Jersey’s Board of Trustee Steven Magee to see Owner & Operator Maira Silva’s work firsthand.

Site visits like this help supporters understand the vital role family child care providers play for children, parents, and the local workforce.

Thank you, Maira and Little Rainbow Kids, for welcoming us.

Inflation hits ALICE harder.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures price changes across a broad range of goods and services — including luxury items ALICE families simply aren’t buying.

The ALICE Essentials Index focuses only on the basics families need daily, including housing, food, child care, and more.

In New Jersey, the cost of those essentials rose even faster than overall inflation from 2007-2024:

📈 CPI increased by 52%
📈 ALICE Essentials Index increased by nearly 70%

In New Jersey, 39% of households couldn’t make ends meet in 2024. That included 10% in poverty and another 30% that were ALICE, with income above the Federal Poverty Level but less than the cost of basics. That’s nearly 2 in 5 households in our community facing impossible choices — food or medicine, rent or child care.

Together, we can change the narrative and ensure that *all* households have better choices than this. Dig into our newest Report, The in New Jersey: UnitedForALICE.org/New-Jersey

You see ALICE every day — but you might not know it.

Workers who are ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) care for children, check out groceries, cook meals, and help with everyday banking needs. Even beyond the workplace, ALICE shows up for our communities across civic, social, cultural, religious, and recreational spaces. And yet, ALICE struggles to get by, with income above the Federal Poverty Level but less than the cost of basics in their counties.

ALICE is everywhere. Let’s make sure ALICE is seen.

This , we celebrate the power of community, belonging, and opportunity — for all of us.

Across New Jersey, ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) workers and families keep our communities running, earning above the Federal Poverty Level but still struggling to afford the basics.

The theme of Pride 2026, , reminds us that communities flourish when everyone has the opportunity to succeed. That's why United Way of Northern New Jersey, along with our state and national partners, is working to better understand local needs, inspire action, and create pathways to financial stability for ALICE households.

Together, we can help build a future where all New Jersey families have the opportunity to thrive — today and for years to come.
