$19,000 a year for infant care in New Jersey. For many working families, the math just isn't working.

When child care costs compete with rent, groceries, and other essentials, families face impossible choices. And for ALICE households already stretching every dollar, affordable child care can feel out of reach.

💙 United In Care is changing the equation. Through its Tuition Assistance program, participating families paid 14% or less of their household income toward child care, giving parents more financial breathing room and greater access to quality care.

Because affordable child care shouldn't be a luxury. It's essential for working families and stronger communities.

Cathy Garcia leads the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation’s portfolio of investments and partnerships advancing economic mobility in New Jersey. A proud daughter of Colombian immigrants, Cathy is helping build a future where more New Jersey families have the opportunity to get ahead.

Through her work at the Dodge Foundation, she partners with organizations working to expand economic opportunity and help more people build a stronger financial future. A brighter future is taking shape — through leaders like Chris Alvarado, Senior Director of Operations and Public Policy at United Way of Tarrant County.

As the United Way that leads the national ALICE* movement, we're proud to work alongside Chris and so many others across the country who are turning ALICE data into action.

During his time as VP of Community Investment, Chris brought a focus on creating pathways to greater financial stability for ALICE workers. Through United Way of Tarrant County’s SEEN program (Supporting Employment Efforts Now), Chris helped connect ALICE workers with training and certifications for high-wage, high-demand careers in fields like trucking, welding, logistics, HVAC/maintenance technology, and aerospace. Participants also receive financial coaching to help them build toward financial independence.

It’s a powerful example of what can happen when workforce development goes beyond getting people into jobs — laying the foundation for greater financial security and opportunity.

What can employers do to better support their employees? It starts with understanding the challenges they face.

ALICE employees are working hard yet still struggle to afford the basics. Through United for ALICE at Work, five local employers: amplify credit union, cap metroatx, iamtouchpoint, texas mutual and our organization spent six weeks learning more about the realities ALICE employees face and exploring practical ways to create more supportive workplaces.

We sat down with Angela Shaw to hear what she learned and why this work matters.

A job change shouldn’t mean losing ground financially.

At the 2026 Investing in Rural America Conference, Cary Dawson, Director of Strategic Partnerships for United For ALICE at Work, joined leaders from across sectors to talk about how rural workers can navigate employment transitions while building greater financial stability.

Alongside Darrell Muniz of the California Farmworker Foundation and Rickie Hager of Fayette County Community Action Agency, Cary explored the benefits cliff, workforce challenges, and how employers, community partners, and policymakers can work together on practical solutions.

Thank you to moderator Alex Ruder of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and to Caitlin Wilson of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond for the invitation and for bringing this important conversation together.

A brighter future is taking shape — through leaders like Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, who saw transportation as a pathway to opportunity.

During her time as New Jersey Department of Transportation Commissioner, Diane kept ALICE* in the proverbial passenger seat — considering how each project or improvement could help families struggling to make ends meet access the resources they need.

Her mission was clear: drive change for ALICE, one ride at a time.

By bringing an ALICE perspective to transportation, Diane showed how leaders can use data to look beyond the immediate purpose of a project and consider how it can help families build greater stability and opportunity.

Her people-centered approach has even been recognized with the Sharon D. Banks Award for Humanitarian Leadership in Transportation, presented by the Transportation Research Board.
