The North American Butterfly Association (NABA) New Jersey Butterfly Club was founded in 1995. It is the oldest of the 23 NABA chapters in the United States. NABA’s purpose is to promote the non-consumptive study, conservation, appreciation, and enjoyment of butterflies. Our chapter is one of NABA’s most active, having meetings with interesting programs nine months of every year, 8-10 field trips
per year, and a summer picnic. We also assist other organizations in their butterfly events, give presentations on butterflies to other nature clubs, work with schools to establish butterfly gardens, assist agencies and conservation groups in removing invasive plant species from colonies of rare butterflies, and report sightings of Threatened and Endangered species to the New Jersey Endangered and Nongame Species Program. Several members compile NABA Fourth of July Butterfly Counts, and many members participate in several such counts. Our members come from many backgrounds and some are experts in other taxa such as plants, reptiles, birds, and other insects, and all gladly share their knowledge and experience with members and non-members alike.
