Students are heading back to school, and safety starts with all of us. New Jersey recorded approximately 16,000 school bus-related crashes from 2016 to 2024. Let's watch for children walking and biking, follow school bus laws, and slow down in school zones.

Communities in Motion: Berkeley Heights 🏘️

What does a community in motion look like?
Sometimes it looks like a student walking or biking to school. A safer crossing on the way to class. A community making room for safe and accessible transportation.

Berkeley Heights is putting those ideas into action. Through its work on Safe Routes to School and Complete Streets, the township has made a commitment to creating a community where walking and biking are part of the picture.

That work earned Berkeley Heights Silver-level recognition through the Safe Routes to School Recognition Program.

The new school year is almost here, which means now is the perfect time to plan your Safe Routes to School programming for 2026-2027. 🗓️

Avenues in Motion offers engaging programs that help students learn safe walking and biking habits, understand traffic safety, and build confidence navigating their communities. Our programs are available for students from Pre-K through 8th grade, with additional projects available for high school students.

Communities in Motion: Wayne 🏘️

Avenues in Motion has partnered with Wayne on a range of initiatives that help people travel more safely and confidently.

Our work has included Street Smart NJ, Safe Routes to School, bike safety events, and senior pedestrian safety programming. Earlier this year, we joined the Wayne Police Department for pedestrian safety presentations at two senior residences, reaching 87 residents in total.

Our Street Smart campaign also showed measurable results, with increased awareness of pedestrian and bicycle safety, greater recognition of the campaign, and improved knowledge of pedestrian safety laws and crosswalk signals.

We're grateful for partnerships like Wayne that turn community needs into meaningful safety programs.

🏘️ Communities in Motion: Dover

What happens when transportation meets art? In 2023, a stretch of road in Dover became a little more colorful while creating an opportunity to examine pedestrian safety and how residents experience their community. 🎨

Avenues in Motion partnered with the Town of Dover, to evaluate the Asphalt Art Project on Chestnut Street near Crescent Field. We surveyed community members and observed the area before and after the artwork was installed to see how it affected perceptions of safety and the experience of the space. After the project, more people felt drivers were likely to slow down and stop for pedestrians. Participants also believed the artwork made the area feel more inviting for walking and biking.

And that's just one part of our partnership with Dover over the years. We've also brought the Street Smart campaign to the community, created localized traffic safety ads, and conducted a bike helmet survey with students at Dover Middle School.

We're grateful for partnerships like this that turn creative ideas into meaningful change and keep communities like Dover in motion.

🏘️ Communities in Motion: Borough of Pompton Lakes

For the past two years, Pompton Lakes has welcomed Junior Solar Sprints into the community, giving students from across the region the chance to race their own solar-powered cars at Hershfield Park.

JSS is one recent example of the partnership between Pompton Lakes and Avenues in Motion. Together, we've worked to promote safer, more connected travel through Safe Routes to School, bike rodeos, a Street Smart Pedestrian Safety Campaign, crossing guard training, and e-bike education.

We're grateful for the partnership and for all the ways Pompton Lakes continues to help keep its community in motion.
