: Carmel Beth Israel’s Jewish Food Festival—more than just food.

This gathering is important because it embodies what community can look like when we open our doors wide. Volunteers (Jewish and not) spend months baking and cooking so thousands can gather, laugh, learn, and leave fuller in every sense. It strengthens Congregation Beth Israel’s ability to educate and outreach, supports those facing hunger, and creates space for cultural exchange that feels personal rather than distant. In Carmel Valley, this festival has become a tradition that says: come as you are, stay for the food, leave with a sense of belonging. That’s why it continues to matter.

Throwing it back to the annual Jewish Food Festival at Congregation Beth Israel.

Why does this event matter so much? Because it turns a synagogue parking lot into a vibrant village for a day—open to all, free to enter, and full of heart. It educates through experience, supports educational programs and hunger-relief efforts, and gives our community a chance to celebrate Jewish life with pride and openness. For many, it’s the first (or favorite) taste of Jewish culture on the Central Coast. That kind of connection is worth protecting and celebrating. Looking back with gratitude, and looking forward to the next one.

to the Jewish Food Festival at Carmel Beth Israel—where food becomes fellowship.

This event matters because it’s one of the few places on the Peninsula where Jewish culture is shared so openly and joyfully with the wider community. From matzo ball soup to babka, from Israeli dancing to sanctuary tours, it invites people of all backgrounds to taste tradition, ask questions, and feel welcome. In a world that often feels divided, this festival reminds us that hospitality and shared meals can create belonging. Here’s to the volunteers, the recipes passed down, and the community that shows up year after year.

Throwback Thursday to the Carmel Jewish Food Festival at Congregation Beth Israel ✨

For nearly four decades, this beloved gathering has brought the Monterey Peninsula together through the simple, powerful act of sharing food and stories. What began in 1988 as a small celebration of Jewish cuisine has grown into a community tradition that welcomes everyone—Jewish and non-Jewish alike—to experience the flavors, music, and warmth of our heritage. It’s important because it builds real bridges: neighbors become friends over latkes and challah, and understanding grows one plate at a time.

Grateful for every volunteer and every guest who keeps this tradition alive.
