🇮🇹 North End Feast – St. Anthony’s 🇮🇹

Join us on Sunday, August 30, for the 107th Annual Saint Anthony’s Feast in Boston’s North End!

The feast opens at 11:00 AM, followed by the procession at 12:00 AM. Expect around 100 vendors with lots of Italian food, drinks, and other goodies, plus live music throughout the day. 🎶🍝

We will meet at 11:30 AM at North Station and then walk over together to the Outdoor Chapel on Endicott Street.

Please make sure to bring cash! 💵

🔥 Ready for VISTA Research Insights on Fusion Reactor Materials? 🔥

This Thursday, Jordan will host us for “How to avoid being absolutely cooked: Development of a low activation tungsten heavy alloy for a fusion reactor first-wall.” Join us for our second Research Insight this week about nuclear devices—this time on the fusion side.

Jordan will introduce us to the challenge of designing materials for the first wall of a fusion reactor, where components face extreme heat, radiation, and activation constraints. We’ll learn why tungsten is a leading candidate, what “low activation” means in practice, and how alloy development can help make fusion devices safer and more viable.

🤖 Ready for a VISTA Research Insights Workshop on MIT Parley? 🤖

This week, we’re hosting a hands-on workshop on MIT Parley, MIT’s platform for using generative AI tools. Join us to learn how Parley can support your research workflows! While it supports the well-known chat interface, Parley also offers an API that might make the platform very interesting for some of us.

🧪 What to expect:
Matt from IS&T will introduce us to Parley and show how MIT students can leverage it effectively for research.

💡 Bring:
Your laptop and MIT credentials so you can follow along and try things out directly.

This workshop is target to our MIT audience. While you are of course invited to join as non-MIT, you will not be able to benefit from the free credits.

We’ll brainstorm new ideas and events with your input, answer your questions, and show you how you can get involved—even if you’re only here for a few weeks or months. And, of course, there will be free bagels for everyone! 🥯

🎱 After the meeting, we’ll head to Flat Top Johnny’s for a pool tournament!

If you can’t make the Open Board Meeting, you can sign up for the waitlist for the pool tournament. If spots become available after the board meeting, we’ll let you know by Monday night. If you are attending the board meeting, you can simply indicate in the RSVP form whether you’d also like to join the pool tournament.

A spontaneous VISTA Research Insights visit to the Wright Brothers Wind Tunnel! 🌬️

Last Friday, we had the opportunity to tour one of MIT’s historic research facilities and learn how the wind tunnel is used for aerodynamic research and testing.

🌬️ Ready for a spontaneous VISTA Research Insights at the Wright Brothers Wind Tunnel? 🌬️

Today, we have the chance to visit the Wright Brothers Wind Tunnel on MIT campus for a guided tour right after VISTA lunch. This one is very spontaneous, as we only received confirmation today—but it should be a great opportunity to get a look inside one of MIT’s historic research facilities.

⏰ Details:
Tour starts at 2:00 PM, right after VISTA lunch

🧪 What to expect:
We’ll get an introduction to the wind tunnel and learn how it is used for research and testing in aerodynamics and related fields. The tour itself will be about 20 minutes.

⚠️ Note:
Because the tour is short and space is limited, we will do consecutive groups if more than 12 people sign up.

📍 Meeting point:
For everyone not coming from VISTA lunch, the exact location will be shared in the group tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for The Freedom Trail: Enemies to This Country! 🇺🇸🌻

Although the weather meant we couldn’t explore Boston’s historic streets as planned, the event moved indoors and became a presentation instead of a walking tour. While we were disappointed to miss the outdoor experience, it was still a fascinating afternoon full of insights into the people, conflicts, and ideas that shaped the American Revolution.

A big thank you to our guide for bringing Boston’s history to life and to everyone who came along despite the change of plans. We hope to walk the Freedom Trail together another time! ⚓
