Five years ago, as we were beginning to emerge from the pandemic, we released an album that would change the trajectory of Sandbox forever. On September 21, 2021, we shared Seven Pillars with the world. This evening-length work by Andy Akiho was his most ambitious chamber music work to date. To accompany the album, we commissioned 11 video artists to create an original film for each movement of Seven Pillars, bringing together the worlds of dance, animation, experimental narrative, time-lapse, and more.
Our collaboration with Andy on Seven Pillars spanned eight years, and was a true passion project between Sandbox and one of our closest friends. Since releasing the album, we’ve had the honor of performing Seven Pillars more than 50 times around the world—from the Percussive Arts Society International Convention Percussive Arts Society , in front of thousands of percussionists, to the Beijing Percussion Festival Matt Herman and Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, where we collaborated with choreographer Benjamin Millepied and L.A. Dance Project. We even brought Seven Pillars to NPR Music Tiny Desk.
And this is just the beginning. It’s been incredible to watch Seven Pillars grow and take on a life of its own over the past decade, and we’re excited to continue sharing it with audiences around the world.
