One man. Many movements.
For LGBTQAI+ History Month, the STAR Program continues our journey through New York City by honoring Bayard Rustin—a visionary civil rights strategist, organizer, and openly gay Black man whose work helped shape some of the most important movements for justice in American history.
Rustin was a key architect of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, bringing together hundreds of thousands of people for one of the Civil Rights Movement's defining demonstrations.
Yet throughout his career, his sexuality was often used against him, forcing one of the movement’s most brilliant strategists to work behind the scenes while others stood at the microphone.
His story reminds us that Black history, LGBTQAI+ history, and civil rights history are deeply connected.
Rustin understood something that still resonates today: lasting progress is built when communities organize, stand together, and refuse to accept inequality as inevitable.
Some people lead from the spotlight. Others change history from behind it. Bayard Rustin did both.
This October, STAR celebrates the people and places that helped shape LGBTQAI+ life, activism, and visibility in New York City.
Our history is all around us.
