On October 6, a dream thirty years in the making became a reality with the official groundbreaking ceremony for NPF’s future home at 299 Degraw Street in Brooklyn. This monumental milestone marks the transformation of a neighborhood landmark into a beacon of musical opportunity. This building is more than bricks and mortar. It's a promise to the next generation that music, opportunity, and hope will always have a place in our community.
The $17.8 million City-funded project will completely transform the historic Degraw Street firehouse over the next two years into a state-of-the-art home for music in the heart of Brooklyn. Yesterday’s groundbreaking ceremony featured remarks from civic and community leaders including the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Diya Vij and NYC Department of Design and Construction Commissioner Paul Ochoa, who both shepherded this project, long-time supporter, Chief Chaplain of the NYPD, and Founder of the Christian Cultural Center Pastor A. R. Bernard, NYC District 33 Councilmember Lincoln Restler who funds NPF’s programs in 7 schools, and Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon.
Onlookers were treated with a performance by Pilar Hill, a brilliant NPF alumnus and Juilliard-trained violinist who performs internationally. Pilar’s talent and commitment to her craft embodies the mission and soul of NPF.
A big thank you to NPF's amazing funders for their unwavering belief in our mission. We look forward to sharing more updates as construction progresses and music begins to fill Degraw Street!
