A major influence in the life and work of our Founder, is Ron’s grandfather Poppie - a builder who intentionally built a large house so his family would “have somewhere to come.” Pictured here are 3 generations: Ronald K. Brown (L), his father(R), and his grandfather (C), in the North Carolina home that Poppie built.

In honor of Juneteenth, we want to showcase Ronald K. Brown and Arcell Cabuag’s work Tender Warriors, created in 2024 on the centennial celebration of jazz pioneer, percussionist and civil rights activist, Max Roach. Set to the soundtrack of Roach’s 1961 album “Percussion Bitter Sweet,” the work beautifully captures the dimensionality of the diaspora, reflecting fire in the instrumentation, movement, and overall tone.
