Today, Brookline for Racial Justice and Equity, Brookline Asian American Family Network, and the Brookline Educators Union are launching a campaign for educational equity in Brookline's public schools.
Brookline may be known for our quality public schools, but our reputation masks deep gaps in outcomes and experiences for students of color and high-needs students, who collectively make up more than half of district enrollment.
- Black, Latino, and disabled students score well below their peers on district testing
- Brookline sends more kids to court over absenteeism than any nearby district
- Black students are identified with a learning disability at three times the rate of their peers
- Black and Latino students are recommended for honors courses at far lower rates
- Identity-based bullying persists, including a case serious enough to draw a federal investigation
In 2025, the School Committee eliminated the Office of Educational Equity and rejected $188,455 raised by the community to preserve it.
Since then, district leaders have put forward no funding, staff, or plan to address these gaps. The School Committee chair has expressed a commitment to equity, and the superintendent has taken some promising early steps, but the OEE closure made clear that progress can be lost without community pressure to protect this work.
